[applause] honorees. when you come on the stage after you speak, you will receive your award and certificate from our wonderful commissioners and then you can exit stage right. is that right? stage right. ok. next award is our industry leader and this is going to leo sosa. he is an immigrant from guantanamo and he launched throw youth technology programs before starting his own non-profit dove mission, which aims to train young adults age 16-24 for careers in tech. he has also worked in many neighborhoods throughout the city helping to connect low income families to broadband, distributing computers and building computer labs in affordable housing communities. please welcome leo sosa. hello. i like the sound of that. now w
damaging property. another came close to homes at cleariew and ever sol in north san jose. they were able to stop the fire from growing but not before coming within striking distance of several homes. reporter: the fir captain on scene tells me it burned about five acres. you can see what s left of an open field. those acres way too close to home for people who live in the neighborhood here. they didn t even wait for the fire department after calling 911. they grabbed their garden hoses. grabbed everybody s hoses because we know there are other fires apparently around here. you say scary, yes. i just hope nobody s home would burn and you never knew where it was going. we call them a few times to come home and it started on the other side, other neighbor s houses. so very scary. the fire department tells me no homes had to be evacuated but the wildlife center did have to be evacuated. the executive director tells me they moved nearly 500 animals to safety. it took fi
permanent residents to encourage them to get to the citizenship, enjoy all those benefits. those benefits are numerous. you re going to be able to situate yourself in better jobs. you re going to get qualified for training programs that are only offered sometimes to citizenships. you re going to always obviously we want to improve your language capabilities so that you re able to navigate these employment training programs and all the other engaging programs that we have. san francisco is the innovation capital of the world and in that way all of the different ethnicities that arrive in san francisco of all different backgrounds need to be part of this innovation, because innovation is not about just one particular group of people. it s about everybody participating. and you should hear some of the tech kids that are in the city who want to hear from the chinese american community, the southeast asian american haunted, the african immigrant community, the latino immigrant com
like mayor lee and the supervisor, i m a proud daughter of american immigrants. they came to this country with odds stacked against them to build a better future for my siblings and my cousins. my father served in the army, but more important to him was that he served at every polling station in every election from the time he was legally able to do so. and at breakfast before every election was a very, very, very engaged, vivid, enlightened conversation about how my mother should vote, even though she didn t always agree with him, and that really it was our responsibility to comment on the things that mayor lee referenced. what kind of health care should we have? what should be the caliber of our schools? what kind of open space should we have? how should we use land? these are all very critical parts of our democracy and our voice, and i m very, very proud on behalf of the san francisco foundation to partner with the city, adrian and her staff, our philanthropic partners, b
