In this op-ed, John Thornton, a BU professor of African American studies and history, writes that the recent decision by Florida’s school administration and its Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, to ban the College Board’s Advanced Placement course on African American studies “has become one more stepping stone” in the governor’s aspirations to become president and “has little, if anything, to do with education in Florida.” He goes on to note that Florida has decided that it’s good politics to cripple students by denying them access to the full richness and complexity of America.

The College Board officially released the curriculum for their AP African American Studies course on Wednesday. The release was met with backlash as many noted that contemporary topics such as intersectionality, Black feminist & queer studies, and reparations were obscured and omitted from the framework.
