The school, off Crosswater Parkway, will open in August and serve approximately 1,500 students.
At its regular meeting Tuesday, the school board voted unanimously (5-0) to name the school, which had tentatively been labeled MM, Pine Island Academy.
The name is a nod to the geographical reference point given by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when the area was used as a base in the 1940s, including a canal it dug to make travel and transport more efficient to surrounding areas.
Principal Amanda Riedl said she was happy with the school board s decision, as about half of school community members who participated in the process favored the name.
