This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. The president , who was all about getting the United States out of iraq, is sending more troops in. Late today, the white house announced that president obama has given the goahead for 1500 more troops to deal with the threat posed by the terrorist group known as isis. With this expansion, the number authorized has grown from 275 in june to 3100 tonight. David martin is at the pentagon for us this evening. David. Reporter scott, president obama is doubling down on his strategy to defeat isis, not only increasing the number of american troops in iraq, but also spreading them out to a half dozen locations across the country. Until now, u. S. Troops have been confined to baghdad and the city of erbil in the north. 630 will be sent as advisers to the headquarters of iraqi units fighting isis north and west of baghdad, including in anbar province, where some of the bloodiest battles of the iraq war took place. 830 of the a
Target, 1,500 more american servicemen and women are going back to iraq in numbers that will double those already on post. They are not intended as combat troops, but theyll be serving in an area surrounded by it. Their stated mission is to train up and stand up the Iraqi Armed Forces so that they can fight isis and other groups. And, yes, many of them are military advisers. And back in vietnam many of our advisers were quickly drawn into combat. It is where we begin tonight with our pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski. Reporter many headed back to iraq on a new everexpanding mission. The Obama Administration announced today it was more than doubling the number of u. S. Military forces now on the ground in iraq from 1,400 to nearly 3,000. Their mission, to train, advise and assist the Iraqi Military in its fight against isis militants. For more than three months u. S. Air strikes have pounded isis forces with limited success while untrained iraqi forces have been unable to halt the

Reporter it was a bizarre twist to find out the woman who gave interviews on tv saying she found the baby in her backyard was actually that babys mom. So many of you reaching out on social media, some with judgment, many with compassion, even a few offering to foster or adopt that newborn and many asking if jackson will face charges. She will not and this is why. In maryland theres a safe haven law where essentially any parent can relinquish their child, responsible adult, can relinquish their child within the first 10 days of birth to a Police Station or hospital.
