The number of people with dementia from minority ethnic groups is increasing as migrant populations in Europe age and some ethnic groups have a higher risk of developing dementia. Although many symptoms of dementia can be managed with good care, the uptake of dementia care services by people from minority ethnic communities remains low.

Dementia numbers will double by year 2050 – warns Cork MEP

Cork based MEP Deirdre Clune is a Vice-Chair of the European Alzheimer’s Alliance Dementia and Alzheimer care must be recognised as a public health priority, according to MEP Deirdre Clune. MEP Clune said measures are being considered at the EU to help to improve the care of people with dementia through early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment and support for caregivers. Given the current health crisis, it is imperative we don’t neglect aspects of health care such as dementia diagnosis, according to MEP Clune. Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune participated in a workshop organised by Alzheimer Europe. MEP Clune is a Vice-Chair of the European Alzheimer’s Alliance.

Alzheimer Europe launches new report on dementia, recommends future priorities across Europe At an online European Parliament workshop hosted by Sirpa Pietikäinen, MEP (Finland), Alzheimer Europe launched a new report Dementia as a European Priority - A Policy Overview which takes stock of dementia policy at an EU level and sets out recommendations for future priorities across Europe. As the European Union is about to agree a new long-term budget and the details of the EU4Health and Horizon Europe programmes are being finalised, Alzheimer Europe reflects on the place of dementia as a political priority in Europe in recent years.
