I am writing this letter as a concerned mother questioning our priorities when it comes to children and what is essential. I am also concerned that the region’s health unit may have overextended its reach. Today my son was denied basic health care because it was deemed non-essential. This was the pinnacle of a tumultuous year which I will describe in this letter.
On Jan. 18, my three-year-old son finally had a much-needed strabismus surgery in Toronto, to correct a serious eye condition he was born with. This surgery which was planned a year ago had to be delayed because of the pandemic and eventual cancellations to surgeries over the past year.
