Leader of UDMR Senators Lorand: An alliance with AUR is of question

Sursa foto: UDMR.ro UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) has never discussed an alliance with AUR (Alliance for Romanians Unity), this proposal being a frivolous one, because one cannot have a pro-minority attitude outside the borders and an anti-minority discourse inside, the leader of the UDMR Senators, Turos Lorand, told AGERPRES on Wednesday. AUR co-chairman Claudiu Tarziu said on Wednesday that his party is considering an alliance with UDMR to defend the rights and freedoms of Hungarians and Romanians in Ukraine, agerpres.ro confirms. Turos Lorand also mentioned that he did not receive any such a proposal from his colleagues in the Senate before the statement appeared in the press.

Food Sovereignty, Romania and the Rising Far-Right | Agricultural and Rural Convention

Rakoon, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons Romania has a large number of small-scale farmers and most advanced in the food sovereignty movement in postsocialist Europe. Eco Ruralis – the Romanian member of La Vía Campesina – is doing commendable work in promoting food sovereignty and peasant rights. Yet, the movement experiences difficulties in gaining visibility from both rural and urban Romanians. Since the far-right Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR) has entered the Romanian parliament, Eco Ruralis may face even more challenges. A recent study by Anna Hajdu and Natalia Mamonova discusses obstacles and opportunities of the food sovereignty movement in Romania, pointing to additional hindrances that may arise through the rural and urban support of a new right-wing party.

Why Romania's miners make the country's government anxious

“They want to close everything,” she told the miners. “Do not give up.” Claudiu Târziu, a leader of AUR, and one of its MPs, Anamaria Gavrilă, who represents Hunedoara county in the Bucharest parliament, have also offered vocal support. Later on February 22, the government appeared to capitulate, at least for now. Labour Minister Raluca Turcan met miners’ representatives and promised that outstanding wages would be paid by the end of the week, and that the loss-making state-owned company which operates the Jiu Valley mines, which has been in insolvency since 2019, would receive a new subsidy to cover salaries for the coming three months.

Despite familiar risks, Romania's new government has a shot at stability

An aura of perilous volatility overshadows Romania following its recent parliamentary election – but the results represent a unique chance for the country. A potent centre-right coalition, if kept together, could usher in a new era of political and economic stability. That path is dotted with familiar risks, however. Romania’s Social Democratic party (PSD) capitalised on the poor mobilisation of its main opponents, the National Liberal party (PNL), to secure a comfortable, five percentage point, victory on December 6. This defied polls, but did not derail parliament. The PNL will remain in government by forging a narrow centre-right majority with centrist USR-Plus and Hungarian-minority UDMR.

Three pro-European parties come together to form a government in Romania

On Monday, three pro-European centre-right parties sealed an agreement in Romania aimed at forming a government with economist Florin Citu as Prime Minister. It came after the country held parliamentary elections on December 6. Former Prime Minister, Ludovic Orban, Leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) who resigned after his party received 25% of the votes said: We want to quickly give Romania a government that pursues reforms which can modernize the country. PNL will form a coalition with two other parties: the USR-Plus and the Magyar Minority Party (UDMR). The new coalition also said it will put forward current Minister of Finance Florin Citu to become the next prime minister.
