Neil Steavenson

Neil Steavenson, formerly of Villard, MN, passed away on Aug. 26, 2020 at age 60. His remains are interred at Lake Amelia Cemetery. Neil helped his mother run The Blue Duck Cafe in Villard. Neil was born with cognitive and learning disabilities that were left untreated by the public schools the 1960s, before the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was passed in 1975. Nevertheless, he worked most of his adult life at various jobs and learned to endure sometimes unkind peers mocking him. He also had some kind employers along the way. As Maya Angelou has said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Neil qualified for disability income late in life, something I mention only to encourage others to apply for aid and be prepared to appeal, no matter their age. Neil could have a great sense of humor even in the darkest of times. While in the hospital he sent a picture of a cricket in his room, joking that, “We have a new floor nurse.”
