At least 25 people have died after drinking toxic alcohol in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh police said on Sunday. The victims were limited to Aligarh s Lodha block on the first day but have now spread to at least four more blocks, some district officials said.
Meanwhile, UP Police have arrested 10 men for selling the toxic liquor. The state police administration on Saturday evening announced the suspension of Lodha police station in-charge Abhay Kumar Sharma for dereliction of duty. The first death in the hooch tragedy was reported in his police station area.
The Aligarh hooch tragedy toll rose to 36 on Monday with authorities confirming 11 more deaths amid fears that it may rise further, even as the Uttar Pradesh government cracked the whip on UP Excise Commissioner P Guruprasad, and suspended two other senior officials.

Taking action against an accused in the Aligarh hooch tragedy which has claimed as many as 36 lives, police officials demolished part of the alleged liquor mafia’s property on Tuesday.
According to sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Koli, Ranjeet Singh, the accused Digambar had constructed a tubewell in Lodha village, on a plot of government land. As per the SDM’s order, a bulldozer was sent in to demolish the illegally constructed tubewell.
The district administration is determined to crackdown on liquor mafia, SDM Singh said.
