Alfa Romeo technical director Jan Monchaux says that due to the health pandemic, the team are still unable to use the simulator they bought in 2019.
Sauber and Alfa Romeo invested in a state-of-the-art simulator at the end of the 2019 campaign with the hope of starting to use it as soon as the following year.
However, the pandemic halted development, meaning that ultimately was not possible and rendered the facility unusable throughout the year.
“Unfortunately, this project was shelved because of the COVID crisis, the long plant shutdown, and some internal issues we had,” Monchaux told
Alfa Romeo target leap forward in 2022 ‘revolution’

Alfa Romeo believe the big F1 rule changes for 2022 give them every chance of making a “leap forward” up the pecking order.
The rebranded Sauber team are perennial midfield battlers, but 2020 was among their poorer seasons for they finished eighth of 10 in the constructors’ World Championship standings with only eight points.
With relatively static regulations for the forthcoming season, it will be difficult for Alfa Romeo – who have Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi as their driver line-up for the third consecutive year – to make significant gains on their rivals.
But 2022 provides the chance of a different story. All teams will have to design and build a new car from scratch, with no time being wasted on getting started, and Alfa Romeo are optimistic that will help them make large strides compared to the opposition.
“I don’t think any effect of the budget cap on the teams’ competitiveness will be evident in 2021,” said Monchaux, quoted by The Race.
“The budget cap is only being introduced for this season when the 2021 cars were already completed.
“There will be in-season development, of course, but with the regulations remaining stable from last year I don’t expect any overhaul beyond some minor changes in the pecking order.
“We will start to see some more impact from 2022 when all the teams will have the same budget ceiling to develop the car.
“I think this will result in the gaps in performance being reduced, although the full effect of the new regulations will take a few years to become apparent.
