Strong increases in cash rental rates in Iowa

Tyler Harris CASH-RENT INCREASE: There was considerable variability across counties in year-to-year changes, as is typical of survey data, but 76 out of the 99 counties in Iowa experienced increases in average rents for corn and soybeans. This increase marks the first substantial rise in cash rents since 2013, when rents peaked. Suggested Event Jun 15, 2021 to Jun 17, 2021 The most recent annual survey of cash rental rates for Iowa farmland shows that rates increased, on average, by 4.5% in 2021 to $232 per acre. This is the first substantial increase in cash rents since 2013, when rents peaked. Four years of declining rents and three years of relatively stable rents followed (see Figure 1). In comparison, nominal corn and soybean prices received by farmers in Iowa declined by 31% and 14%, respectively, since mid-2013.

Cover crops work best paired with livestock

Tyler Harris LIVESTOCK IN MIX: When livestock are added to the mix, net returns from cover crops before corn and soybeans typically increase. Resilient Ag Landscapes: Cover crop economics work best when grazed by livestock and supported by cost-share. While the benefits of cover crops for soil health are well-documented, the economic benefits and yield impact on the subsequent cash crop are largely anecdotal and highly variable. Alejandro Plastina, Iowa State University associate professor and Extension economist, recently outlined the results of several studies on cover crop adoption and economic considerations as part of an Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar.
