After filing plans with the City of Des Plaines and Illinois Gaming Board last month, on Monday night, Rivers Casino Des Plaines received the green light from the City Council for its proposed $87 million expansion.
Construction could reportedly begin as early as this spring at the U.S. midwestern state‘s most lucrative casino but
still needs regulatory approval from the Illinois Gaming Board. And while a vote has yet to be scheduled, Rivers spokesman Dennis Culloton said the project “is in front of them,” according to the Daily Herald newspaper.
Project plans:
Jointly owned by Louisville, Kentucky-based gambling giant Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN) and Chicago-based Rush Street Gaming, if approved, the 10-year-old gambling venue will see a two-story addition built between the existing 140,363 sq ft casino building and the recently enlarged four-level parking garage located on the north side of the 20-acre Cook County property.
Des Plaines businesses could receive municipal grants of up to $2,000 under a new program designed to help small businesses recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

Only one of the three mayoral hopefuls in Des Plaines supports the city council s decision last year to enforce a temporary ban on indoor restaurant dining and bar service ordered by Gov. J.B. Pritzker because of rising COVID-19 infection rates.
Candidate and 8th Ward Alderman Andrew Goczkowski voted to uphold the state-mandated ban, and he stood by that vote Tuesday in a joint interview with the Daily Herald.
I think we did the right thing, and I d do it again, he said.
Suriano drops out of Des Plaines City Council race, leaving four candidates
Updated 2/18/2021 5:40 PM
A Des Plaines City Council candidate has dropped out of the crowded race for the 3rd Ward seat but his name may still appear on ballots.
Robert K. Suriano is no longer seeking the post in the April 6 election because his new work hours created a conflict, he said Thursday.
Suriano s departure from the contest leaves four candidates for the 3rd Ward seat: Eugene Fregetto, Shawn T. Killian, Sean Oskerka and Norbert J. Paprocki.
In an email to the Daily Herald, Suriano endorsed Fregetto.
Term limits prevent incumbent Denise Rodd from seeking reelection.
Sayad drops out of Des Plaines mayoral race, leaving 3 candidates Dick Sayad, former mayoral candidate in Des Plaines
Former Des Plaines Alderman Dick Sayad has dropped out of the city s mayoral race.
That leaves three candidates: 6th Ward Alderman Malcolm Chester, 8th Ward Alderman Andrew Goczkowski and former 8th Ward Alderman Michael Charewicz.
Term limits prevent incumbent Matthew Bogusz from running again.
Sayad, a former 4th Ward alderman, submitted a formal withdrawal of candidacy on Jan. 28, Deputy City Clerk Laura Fast confirmed. He announced his decision to drop out of the race on Facebook. This decision was not easy, but I felt it had to be made, Sayad said.
