Albion council discussion goes hi-tech

ALBION — The Albion Town Council took a high-tech turn in its discussions during the council’s April 26 meeting. Councilmen Darold Smolinske and John Morr had both watched an economic development video the town had purchased. Smolinske came away with a totally new perspective for attracting businesses to Albion. The conversation came on the heels of Town Manager Tena Woenker discussing a webinar opportunity May 15 concerning broadband internet access to be put on by the engineering firm DLZ. Woenker said there are grants which can be applied for concerning such improvements. “This is important for business,” Morr said. “If there’s anything we can do to improve internet service in Indiana, I think we should.”

Albion to open gravel lot for parking

ALBION — The Albion Town Council Tuesday voted 5-0 to open up a gravel lot it owns to public parking, adding an extra 15-20 spots to what has become a very congested downtown area. Due to the construction of a new county annex on the block to the west of the Noble County Courthouse, the downtown has lost: • spots on the west side of the York Street across from the Noble County Courthouse; • the parking lot at the former prosecutor’s office where the courthouse is being built. A recent day saw multiple steel trucks attempting to deliver their loads to the construction site. According to Albion Town Marshal Scott Cole, when one truck was inside the fenced-in area waiting to be unloaded, the other steel trucks had nowhere to go, further adding congestion to the downtown.

Albion pharmacy closing

On April 26, it will likely become the first telepharmacy in the state to close. Warsaw-based Pill Box Pharmacy announced in a letter sent to customers Thursday that after two years in operation, its Albion location will be closed effective April 26. Town officials said Friday they have already begun the process of trying to find a replacement pharmacy for the town. “We are really sad to hear of the closing of the Pill Box Pharmacy in Albion,” Albion Town Councilman John Morr said. “We plan to contact other pharmacies to see if they have an interest in our community.” Morr was a driving force behind legislation allowing telepharmacies in the state as well as bringing the Pill Box to Albion. The pharmacy opened on Feb. 11, 2019.

Albion to ask county for help with grant

ALBION — The grant money is there for a program that would provide visibility to the Arc Noble County Foundations. Finding someone to do the time-consuming regular reporting which comes as a requirement for such a grant may be the stumbling block. As such, Noble County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Gary Gatman said Tuesday night he would approach Noble County officials about being the municipal body the funding would be funneled through. Albion Town Manager Tena Woenker pitched to the Albion Town Council the idea of applying for a $75,000 Community Connections for People with Disabilities grant on behalf of the Arc, which is headquartered in Albion.
