The new Horizon Cruise Terminal THE latest £55 million cruise terminal in Southampton has been named Horizon Cruise Terminal, following a competition which called for suggestions backed by the Dorset Echo. Associated British Ports, the statutory harbour authority for Southampton Water, announced the name for its fifth world-class, open access cruise terminal. A competition was launched this month in partnership with Dorset Echo, the Bournemouth Echo and Daily Echo to find a name for the terminal befitting to its significance of the city and surrounding area. With nearly 4,000 suggestions entered, Horizon Cruise Terminal was put forward by Anna Chojnacka having been chosen at random from multiple entries of the same name. Anna wins a seven-night cruise holiday offered by the terminal’s cruise partners, MSC Cruises.

Port operator ABP has invested £300,000 in the rail service for car exports. It is the first automotive service to operate in the port’s Western Dock and means ABP’s rail services for the industry will reach both the Eastern and Western docks. Alastair Welch, director at the Port of Southampton, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed this new automotive service to the Western Docks for BMW. “As the UK’s number one export port for vehicles, we look forward to continuing to expand Southampton’s automotive offer by rail even further in the future.” Southampton is the UK’s number one port for the automotive industry, handling around 900,000 vehicles a year.
A HUGE Southampton running event will take place this year, organisers have said. Bosses organizing the ABP Southampton Marathon have confirmed that the event will return to the city this September. Originally scheduled for April this year, following talks with Southampton City Council and other key stakeholders, it has now been decided to move this popular Spring event to September 5. The event will be hosted during the autumn when Covid-19 restrictions should be eased far enough to allow the event to happen safely for runners, the volunteers and the city.
