The Oklahoma Republican Partyâs anti-Semitic Facebook post â and a far-right Senate candidateâs defense of the party â represent both an age-old discriminatory sentiment and a new wave of radical Republicanism, scholars and experts say.
While other Oklahoma Republicans told The Transcript they condemn the state GOPâs Friday Facebook post â which equated restrictions for the unvaccinated with Jewish Europeans being forced to wear gold stars during the Holocaust â Senate candidate Jackson Lahmeyer said he stands by and supports the partyâs anti-Semitic messaging. Lahmeyer is endorsed by John Bennett, chair of the state Republican Party.

If youâre one of the millions of people whoâs seen Mariya Takeuchiâs âPlastic Loveâ hovering in your YouTube recommendations, you probably know about Plastic Lover. In 2017, the anonymous account uploaded an extended version of the 1984 Japanese pop song to YouTube, and in the process helped catalyze a global obsession with the funky, carefree genre known as city pop.
Part of why âPlastic Loveâ got stuck in the YouTube algorithm has to do with the videoâs thumbnail photo, a wistful black-and-white headshot of Takeuchi taken from a different single. This same picture is ultimately what led to the videoâs removal from the site in 2018, after the photographer, Alan Levenson, filed a copyright strikeânot Mariya Takeuchiâs record label, as one might imagine. Months later, Levenson and Plastic Lover came to an understanding, and the video was restored with proper attribution, now reaching 63 million views.
