A police chief has a sort of shelf life, according to Jeffrey Smythe, Burlington’s outgoing chief of police.
“A police chief can either leave at just the right time, leave too soon or stay too long when they are no longer effective,” Smythe told the Times-News. “The last few years they wane in their energy … they stay when their hearts are not in it.”
Depending on how long the city takes to find a successor, Smythe, 56, could step down as late as May after eight years in Burlington. It was something he’s thought about for a while, but only decided a couple of weeks ago to announce his intent to retire.
