It’s been a brutal 10 months for Garden State grub.
New Jersey has lost dozens of restaurants during the coronavirus pandemic. Some stood for decades, others were just starting their culinary journey neither could make ends meet amid the crippling shutdowns and restrictions.

The pandemic laid waste to New Jersey restaurants and our dining habits in 2020, but a guy’s gotta eat, right?
Actually, make that two guys, as Jeremy Schneider and Pete Genovese, in our thankless duties as food writers (eat everything in sight, let the company pay for it) ate our way around the state last year, masks and forks at the ready.
Here’s a list of the 50 New Jersey dishes you must try in 2021, based on the 25 best dishes we each tried in 2020. Pete did similar lists based on the best items he ate in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The only difference with this one is Jeremy is joining in on the fun.

I like taking photos of my food as much as I enjoy eating it. It’s part of my job, sure, but there is something about bringing a big, fat, juicy burger, a nice greasy slice of pizza, or a gooey Taylor ham/pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich to life.
I take pride in my food photos; well, most of them anyway. Let’s face it: Most Facebook food photos, even those in food groups where you’d expect better, look like they were shot at the bottom of the ocean.
