Supplementation with pasteurized Akkermansia may reduce gut permeability, anxiety-like behaviour and memory impairment in animal models of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), says a new study.
In a recent study, researchers from the Luxembourg Institute of Health suggested that Akkermansia muciniphila a bacterium found in the mucus layer of the human intestinal tract exacerbates food allergies when the gut microbiota of germ-free lab mice is deprived of dietary fiber. The Dutch microbiologist who discovered Akkermansia, however, says it is too much of a stretch to extrapolate these findings to other models.
Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina are reported to be the first to decode the genetic makeup of Akkermansia, a next-generation probiotic with potential metabolic and immunological benefits.
