Funding agreed for historic St Michael's Well in Longtown

St Michael’s Well was discussed at a meeting last week. The tourist attraction is located behind St Michael’s and All Angels Church, Ainstable. Historic England describes it as a “holy well, probably early 17 century”. Funds were previously made available for the restoration of the stonework, with a small amount set aside for maintenance. Last month, former resident Hazel Thomlinson wrote to the council to say the pathways leading to the site would be ‘unsafe’ if foliage was not regularly cut back. Karen Johnson, parish clerk, said: “My concern is that we will not have enough to keep it up to a reasonable standard I would ask the council to help with the funding to be maintained.”

Electricity North West, which powers East Lancashire, says that the money was invested as part of its annual Powering Our Communities scheme which aims to support the development of community and local energy initiatives ranging from providing advice on energy efficiency to supporting energy users who are living in vulnerable circumstances. The company has funded seven projects across the region including Green Rose CIC’s Energy Ambassador scheme in Lancashire, which intends to recruit community volunteers across the county to help residents cut energy bills and stay warm, along with the Carbon Co-op and Youth Focus North West, which both aim to connect and educate young people on environmental issues across Lancashire and Greater Manchester.
