Breaking News | N120b Intervention Will Address Nigeria's Electricity Challenges, Say Experts

Decry estimated billing Stakeholders in the electricity sector, yesterday, said the Federal Government’s intervention in the power sector, especially efforts being made to address challenges limiting the capacity of distribution companies (DisCos) is necessary to improve electricity supply. The experts also insisted that funding by the Centre Bank of Nigeria (CBN) hovering around N120 billion could drastically reduce the lingering challenges of arbitrary billing of end-users and ensure evacuation of stranded generation capacity. With an estimated metering gap of five million, electricity customers had repeatedly raised concerns over arbitrary billing. The Federal Government through the CBN last year, launched a mass metering programme to improve revenue collection and ensure a lasting solution to estimated billing.

W'Bank: Power Sector Credibility Depends on Visible Results

By Emmanuel Addeh The World Bank has said that Nigerians’ faith in the power sector can only be boosted when they see visible results from ongoing reforms in the country. The Bank’s Practice Manager, West and Central Africa Energy, Ashish Khanna, who stated this during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, however stated that the challenge of credibility in the sector was not only a Nigerian problem. “People are really struggling on what to believe in the power sector reforms, although Nigeria is not alone. “What we are seeing internationally is that the trust and credibility often come when there’s a carefully drafted integrated vision for the sector and there are actual delivery of results that people really want to see,” he stated.

'It's inaccurate' -- FG refutes World Bank report on poor power supply

Advertisement The World Bank’s Power Sector Recovery Program (PSRP) fact sheet disclosed that But in a statement on Sunday, Ahmad Zakari, special adviser to the president on infrastructure, said it was unclear what empirical evidence the Bretton Woods institution used to arrive at the figures. “It is inaccurate to make a blanket statement that 78 percent of Nigerians have less than 12 hours daily access. The data from NERC is that 55 percent of citizens connected to the grid are in tariff bands D and E which are less than 12 hours supply,” Zakari said. Advertisement “Those citizens are being fully subsidised to pre-September 2020 tariffs until Discos are able to improve supply.
