New Year s Day 2021 was a low key affair in Drogheda - unlike the same night 80 years ago when German bombers flew low over the town, before dropping bombs a short distance from the town centre.
Drogheda was shaken by heavy explosions on that Wednesday night, January 1, 1941, at about 9.40pm, and the sound of an aeroplane flying over the town shortly afterwards helped to confirm the residents fears that bombs had been dropped in the vicinity of the town. People ran out onto the streets asking each other what had happened, and military could be seen making in haste for their headquarters, following the announcement in cinemas and dance halls directing them to do so.
