'Botched' NYC Mayor's Contest Casts Doubt on Ranked-Choice Voting

Residents of New York City vote on primary election day on June 22 in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. This was the first year in the city for ranked-choice voting, which allows voters to rank up to their top five candidates in a given race. (Photo: Michael M. Santiago/ Getty Images) After New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary election last week, the preliminary 10 percentage-point lead enjoyed by candidate Eric Adams suggested the outcome was a near-certainty, even under the city’s new ranked-choice voting system.  More than a week later, however, the nation’s biggest city has been cast into confusion and heated debate over whether the use of a new process that allows voters to rank their preferences for up to five candidates (used only in party primary elections) was a smart decision.

UFT raises concerns about NYC dropping snow days, report says

UFT raises concerns about NYC dropping snow days, report says Updated 3:28 PM; Today 2:24 PM The United Federation of Teachers said there would be challenges transitioning to remote learning in lieu of snow days, according to Chalkbeat. (Staten Island Advance/Bill Lyons) Staff-ShotStaff-Shot Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. After New York City education officials announced that students will shift to remote instruction in lieu of canceling school due to severe weather like snow, the city’s teachers union said it wouldn’t be an easy transition, according to a recent report by Chalkbeat. When it released its 2021-2022 school calendar, the city Department of Education (DOE) announced last month that there won’t be any more snow days for students, and instead will move to remote learning to help the city reach its state-mandated 180 days of instruction.
