Call for artists to submit work for Africatown Plaza in Seattle's Central District

Author: Brit Moorer (KING5) Updated: 9:41 PM PDT May 14, 2021 SEATTLE Artists from around the world are being invited to submit work that’ll be part of a community-led housing effort in Seattle’s Central District.  Africatown Community Land Trust is tackling displacement and community ownership in the Central District.  One of the group s latest projects will eventually turn into a space of healing for the Black community. If you look around in Seattle you see a lot of cranes and most of the cranes are not building things that everyone can afford,” said K. Wyking Garrett, president of Africatown Community Land Trust.

Africatown Plaza, with 126 affordable units near 23rd and Union, Africatown Community Land Trust will have a large public plaza where public artwork is planned along with other areas of the seven-story building (designed by GGLO). To that end, the nonprofit recently issued a call for art, in all disciplines and media, to focus “on restoring and celebrating the city s Black and Pan-African communities.” About 20 art stations will be curated by local organization Wa Na Wari with architect Dream Collaborative. Africatown CEO K. Wyking Garrett said in a statement, “We need the genius of our local and global artists to help tell the stories of our journey; a lot of what has happened has been traumatic, so we need to build spaces of healing and restoration.” For more info, see africatownplaza.com. Africatown Plaza is being planned at 1100 23rd Ave., on the south end of a block where the separate Midtown Public Square is nearing completion to the north, facing East Union Street.
