Ekiti 2022: Desist from premature campaigns - INEC warns APC, PDP, others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, warned political parties, including the APC and PDP, to stay away from engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2022 governorship election or risk being sanctioned. Dr Adeniran Tella, Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, gave the warning in Ado-Ekiti at a stakeholders’ meeting with political leaders, religious groups, youths and women. The meeting was convened to address issues bothering on expanding voters’ access to polling units, as it affected the state. “The commission is challenging you to play this game by the rules,” Tella said. “The Electoral Act, 2010, Section 9991, as amended, frowns at organising election campaigns ahead of the stipulated time.

By Rotimi Ojomoyela – Ado-Ekiti A Yoruba organisation, Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF), has faulted the agitation by a group led by Mr Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho, that Yorubaland should secede from Nigeria, describing such move as treasonable and unpatriotic The group also lampooned the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for allegedly spearheading arson attacks and killings under the guise of secession in the Southeast. YAF advised that Yoruba should resist the IPOB and their agents from brainwashing and infiltrating their ranks. Speaking at a protest held in Ado Ekiti on Thursday to condemn the agitators, the group’s National Coordinator, Adeshina Animashaun, regretted the spate of violence in the southwest and southeast in recent times leading to loss of lives and property.

The group noted that it has keenly observed and followed recent violent events in some states in the southwestern part of Nigeria, adding that the group was unfazed by the unpleasant reality as it has in the past warned about such impending violence in the year 2020. The expressed its regrets over the development, blaming it on what was described as insensitivity of both state and Federal Government as well as Nigeria’s security agencies.

By Adesina Wahab A group, the Yoruba Appraisal Forum, YAF, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and governors of the six South-West states to integrate the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly called Amotekun, into the community policing initiative of the Federal Government under the Nigeria Police Force. YAF stated that Amotekun should urgently be reformed, integrated and placed under the supervision and control of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to check the excesses now manifesting in its operations, in the interest of peace and national security. The Forum alleged that Amotekun has been hijacked by forces planning to destabilise the South-West and the country at large, stressing that the regional security outfit needs to be properly kept under security watch by the police that is constitutionally empowered to secure all Nigerians.
