Speakers for more investment in R&D in universities

DHAKA, April 24,2021 (BSS) – Speakers at a webinar today called for harnessing more investment in the research and development (R&D) in the country’s universities in order to remain competitive globally.
They made the call at the webinar of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) titled “Industry and Academia Linkage: Role of Academia” held today.
Prof. Satya Prasad Majumder, Vice Chancellor, BUET, M Abul Kashem Mozumder, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh University of Professionals, Dr. Carmen Z Lamagna, Vice Chancellor, American International University of Bangladesh and Prof. Imran Rahman, Special Advisor (Board of Trustees) & Dean, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh joined as special discussants.

Dipu Moni urges private sector to invest in education sector

For a sustainable and commercially viable research ecosystem, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni urged on Saturday the private sector to invest in the education sector.
“Still we have gap between the industry and academia, and to reduce the gap we should do a mapping to identify skill requirements. Despite Covid-19 has manifold socio economic impacts, however it has created a lot of opportunities and a tripartite collaboration among industry-academia and research can reap these benefits in future ,” she added.
The education minister said this while speaking as chief guest at the online seminar titled “Industry-Academia Linkage: The New Frontier”, arranged by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) , said a press release.

Graduates are struggling in the job market as the conventional education system does not equip students with the skills industries demand, according to Rizwan Rahman, president of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
Bangladesh has a labour force of about 6.35 crore which is growing at 2.2 per cent, meaning that there are around 20 lakh new entrants every year.
However, 38.6 per cent of the graduates face unemployment, and it indicates a mismatch of skills, said Rahman at a webinar styled, Industry-Academia Linkage: The New Frontier .
