FALLBROOK
Deputies responding to a report of a traffic collision Sunday night in Fallbrook found a mortally wounded gunshot victim who later died at a hospital, sheriff’s officials said.
The victim was identified Monday afternoon as 62-year-old David Nathaniel Caballero. He was shot in the lower back on Alta Vista Road near Acacia Lane about 8:20 p.m., officials said. Medics took him to the hospital, where he died.
The shooting is being investigated by the sheriff’s homicide unit.
No details about what led up to the shooting were immediately released. Homicide investigators said an autopsy determined Caballero’s cause of death to be the gunshot wound, but the manner of death is still under investigation.
