After jumping into an icy pond to help his little sister, 10-year-old Benjamin Luckett died Sunday and his sister remains in the hospital in critical condition, said Interim Pastor Stacy Stilgenbauer of Leawood East Baptist Church. There were five kids, all pretty active, and they were all very loving, Stilgenbauer said. They re a nice family.
Benjamin Luckett and some of his siblings were enjoying the winter weather Sunday morning when 6-year-old Abigail Luckett slipped into icy water near Millington, said Stilgenbauer, a church staff member who has known the family for almost a decade. At least three of the kids were down near the pond, my understanding is Abigail fell in and Benjamin jumped in to go after her, Stilgenbauer said.

Jamie added that the children s mother, Christine, told Abigail about her brother Benjamin s death. Christine was praising God he gave her the strength to tell Abby. She had been so burdened by knowing she had to do this. Abby is upset, but taking it okay. She wanted to place her hand in the mold of Benjamin s hand that the staff made. Christine is thankful for your prayers, the family friend wrote.
On Wednesday, Jamie said Abigail is now in a regular room and slowly getting assistance with walking.
She is awake and alert and seems to be doing a lot better, said Robertson.
Chad Robertson is a longtime friend of the Luckett family. They first met at a Bartlett bowling lanes years ago. All his kids bowl on Saturday morning. They bowl with my kids in the youth program at Andy B s, said Robertson.
The Lucketts don t have a lot of money to pay for Benjamin s funeral and other expenses, so Robertson started a GoFundMe page to help raise money. We kind of felt helpless sitting there, not being able to help, said Robertson.
The Lucketts attend Leawood East Baptist Church. Robertson knew the church was raising money on its website for the family, but said he felt he had to do something.
