Top 5 seasons in White Sox history

share-square-367169 CHICAGO Here’s a look at the Top 5 seasons in White Sox history, along with a few White Sox teams who just missed. 1. 1917 The White Sox have won three World Series titles but have won 100 games exactly one time in franchise history a total reached via a 100-54-2 record in ’17. A team featuring catcher Ray Schalk, second baseman Eddie Collins, third baseman Buck Weaver and Shoeless Joe Jackson in the outfield beat the New York Giants in six games to claim baseball’s top prize. Eddie Cicotte stood No. 1 on the pitching staff with 28 wins, 29 complete games, a 1.53 ERA and seven shutouts, while Red Faber, Lefty Williams and Reb Russell also made strong mound contributions. Faber earned the wins in Games 2, 5 and 6 of the World Series and lost Game 4.

White Sox best debut seasons

share-square-607393 My mistake wasn’t the choice of José Abreu at No. 1 for the White Sox. That pick remains. But I left off Dick Allen’s highly impressive 1972 season when listing other worthy candidates for that honor. That issue will be rectified, as the Top 5 are now listed below. The player’s season in this category is judged by the actual first pitch thrown or first swing taken with the White Sox. So while Ron Kittle had a power-packed Rookie of the Year campaign in 1983, he already had 32 plate appearances in ‘82. The same goes for left-handed pitcher Gary Peters, who won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in ’63 but made 12 appearances combined over the previous four years.

JAWS and the 2021 Hall of Fame Ballot: One-and-Dones, Part 1

The following article is part of Jay Jaffe’s ongoing look at the candidates on the BBWAA 2021 Hall of Fame ballot. For a detailed introduction to this year’s ballot, and other candidates in the series, use the tool above; an introduction to JAWS can be found here. For a tentative schedule and a chance to fill out a Hall of Fame ballot for our crowdsourcing project, see here. All WAR figures refer to the Baseball-Reference version unless otherwise indicated. For better or worse, I’m a completist. In 17 years of analyzing Hall of Fame ballots using my JAWS system, I’ve never let a candidate pass without comment, no matter how remote his chance of election. From the brothers Alomar to the youngest Alou and the elder Young, I’ve covered ’em all. Thus it’s my sworn duty to tackle the minor candidates on the 2021 BBWAA ballot. I count 18 major ones the 14 holdovers plus Mark Buehrle, Tim Hudson, Torii Hunter, and Barry Zito (the only newcomer to win a major award) leavin
