TVA: Hot weather heats up power demand as people try to cool down

TENNESSEE, USA The weather is heating up across East Tennessee, with temperatures in the 90s throughout the week.
As the temperature gets higher, the Tennessee Valley Authority said they expect the demand for power to rise as well. They said they expect power to top 30,000 megawatts on Thursday as people turn on the air conditioners. Frankly, we kind of think of this as the Superbowl, said Aaron Melda, the power supply senior vice president. Our folks are excited about ensuring we can keep the lights on and people comfortable for the next few days as we see this heat move across the system.

JACKSON, Tenn. Plumbing and heating companies are swamped with customers having issues with pipes and heating systems, but they say there are a few things you can do to ease the strain on your homes.
Lanier English with McCoy’s Heating & Air says there a few things you can do to prevent frozen pipes or heating issues in your home, at least until a technician can get there.
“Keep water dripping from faucets, both hot and cold, so just turn the knobs just a little bit. It doesn’t have to be very hard, just enough to keep water flowing through the pipes,” English said.

The Tennessee Valley Authority announced Tuesday that Ian Grant, a TVA Transmission & Power Supply engineer with almost 20 years of service, has earned the utility s highest engineering honor the Ike Zeringue Engineer of the Year award.
Grant s work helps guard against massive power failures that could cost the nation billions of dollars in lost economic activity. He leads TVA s research on electromagnetic pulse effects, including establishing a grid response model to severe geomagnetic disturbances such as solar storms and initiating a geomagnetically induced current blocker to meet Department of Energy requirements.
