this is what they ll be focusing on. japan 516 continue approach. reporter: communication with air traffic control. japanese authorities saying five members of that coast guard plane sitting on the runway were killed. this was part of the twin tragedies that struck japan within 24 hours. that coast guard flight headed to western japan to deliver aid after a massive 7.6 earthquake shook the country hours into the new year. the quake sparking fires and liquifying the ground, triggering mudslides. the death toll there rising. at least 55 people have died, as rescuers race to find trapped residents under collapsed buildings. and more tremors today, as new footage shows the widespread destruction. roads split in two. homes buried under the mud. david: just extraordinary, these two disasters for japan. matt gutman live at the airport in tokyo. matt, you were telling us that some of the passengers are the ones who have been stranded, trying to rebook flights, and what a miracle that so
nearly 400 people, including eight infants, made it out alive after the airliner crashed in tokyo today. this was the scene inside of the airbus a350 after it hit a coast guard plane. five people in the smaller plane died, and the public broadcast reported the coast guard captain is in critical condition. the big jet here is japan airlines flight 516. it flew in from the northern island of hokkaido, and it was landing at hon ada international airport. the coast guard crew was headed to help recovery efforts from the deadly earthquake that had rocked japan s west coast just yesterday. joining us now, we have pete
who has an incredible safety culture and especially near the united states. we will get to that in a second. you can see in the video of the flight coming in to land on the 3-4 right in haneda of the plane breaking into a fireball, and of course, this image is going to be used heavily by investigators at the japan transport safety board. they are in charge of the investigation, and the airbus that made the a-350 that japan was flying is now going to be a part of the investigation and they are sending a team to help out. what is incredible here is that all of these people, the 379 people including 12 crew were able to make it out efficiently and quickly and safely from this japan airlines flight 516. that is really pretty incredible, because you can see in an evacuation after evacuation passengers grabbing their bags and then leaving the plane. this happened so quickly, and
