second-place romney. after all that, here s where the candidates stand. cnn estimates romney now has 404 delegates of the 1,144 a nominee needs. santorum 16 a delegates, gingrich 106, ron paul still hasn t won a single primary or caucus, has. if not must wins, all three are seen as can-wins. between them, well, they re campaigning today in all three states. president obama is on his way to charlotte, north carolina, where he will accept the democratic nomination six months from now, he s going there to talk manufacturing at the daimler truck plant. daimler trucks hired 1,000 people last year, some of whom had been laid off in the recession. the president speaks at the noon hour eastern time. if he makes news, you ll hear it first right here on cnn. super tuesday was anything bus eight-term dennis could you niche lost his primary battle against the bandy 15-term congresswoman. they were forced to compete in the same district. kaptor is the longest-serves woman in the hou
this was a big night tonight. lots of states. we re going to win a few. we re going to lose a few, but as it looks right now, brother going to get at least a couple of gold medals and a whole passel full of silver medals. so this morning romney cannot claim the crushing victories to win over skeptics, but he is amassing delegates. more than 400 so far. that s way ahead of santorum. gingrich and ron paul who failed to win a single state last night. but the race still has a long way to go. tonight we re doing some counting. we re counting up the delegates for the convention. it looks good. we re counting down the days until november and that looks even better. ohio may not have offered the most delegates last night, but it could be the most telling. and with romney scoring a razor thin victory, some say it speaks volumes about santorum as well. our political editor paul steinhauser is in columbus, the state capitol. paul, what should we take away from ohio? reporter:
a fellow at the institute of politics at harvard s kennedy school of government. and steve moore is with us for the first time. economics writer for the wall street journal editorial page. thank you for being with us. our starting point is super tuesday, of course. ten states will go to the polls today. there are 419 delegates up for grabs and potentially 2 presidential campaign on the line. if you look at the map of today s super tuesday, contest, newt gingrich says he s going to win dpnlg and polls are supporting him on that. rick santorum says he s going to do well in tennessee and oklahoma and the polls are supporting him in that. mitt romney says he s going to win massachusetts and vermont and idaho and the polls support him on that and he plans to win virginia, partly because he s the only person on the ballot along with ron paul. so that s probably a pretty good guess. he s leading by a lot of the poll there s. what he s focused on now is the battleground state of
