BEAVER FALLS Workers at the Beaver County Humane Society s thrift store came into a soggy mess Monday morning.
The store s manager walked in to find broken ceiling tile, soaked shelves and a flooded floor. A burst water pipe destroyed a portion of the shop, causing a portion of the ceiling to come tumbling down, executive director Susan Salyards said. The manager jumped into action to stop the water and save merchandise from damage, but it is going to take a long time to clean up, Salyards said. We are unsure at this point about the extent of the damage.
The thrift shop, located along Seventh Avenue in Beaver Falls, is the largest fundraising tool for the Center Township-based shelter. In 2018, the store brought in more than $100,000 for the shelter by selling clothes, accessories, toys, entertainment devices and more.

Since their last report on Friday, the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) is reporting eight more cases in the James and Hudson Bay region. The Moose Cree First Nation report that the cases are in Moosonee.
They are also issue a potential public exposure risk for people who may have attended the GG’s Ace Hardware Store in Moosonee from Thursday, Feb. 11 to Friday. Feb. 19.

Dr. Lianne Catton, Medical Officer of Health, PHU noted that through the investigation of the new cases, “we have learned that there may have been a potential risk of exposure to the public related to the store.”

Forty years ago, I worked with a fellow named Richard in Columbus, Ohio, where I live.
When he learned that I grew up in Pittsfield, he shared that he had recently been to my hometown and had lunch at Samelâs Deli. Periodically, I see Richard, who is now over 90, and every time, he mentions that the best chopped liver he ever had was at Samelâs.
Growing up in Pittsfield, I remember eating at a couple of other New York-style delicatessens that had popular ethnic Jewish fare like the chopped liver, thick pastrami and corned beef sandwiches on rye bread, potato pancakes, brisket, smoked whitefish, bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, half-sour pickles, crepes called blintzes and New York cheesecake.
