Pandemic cancels family visits to prison, capping off year of worry, isolation for inmates

SALT LAKE CITY Shayla Leeks two children won t open gifts until the phone rings on Christmas morning. She wants their dad to hear the shouts and laughter in their Brigham City living room all the way from the Utah State Prison in Draper. In any other year, Leeks family and many others would pile in their cars and travel to the prison to visit loved ones over the holidays. But like most other gatherings, the pandemic has called off quality time for inmates and their family members. Families of inmates in the Utah State Prison have spent most of the year worrying for their loved ones health. Several are mourning after 11 who tested positive for COVID-19 later died, either at the prison or a hospital.

Sylacauga superintendent stands by plan to bring students back to schools after holidays (free content)

SYLACAUGA The Sylacauga Board of Education held a brief called meeting Friday morning and discussed recent concerns about COVID-19.  Superintendent Dr. Jon Segars gave a small report about the current state of the virus in the system.  Segars told the board he stands by his recommendation from the BOE s Dec. 1 meeting, in which the board approved the system’s plan for the spring semester. The plan calls for most students, barring some with health concerns, to return to school four days a week, with an E-learning day every Wednesday.  Board member Melissa Garris asked if students would be returning Jan 5 instead of when the second semester begins Jan 19. Segars said principals have encouraged virtual students to return Jan. 5.

Wichita lawyer Dan Peare will chair the Wichita State University Presidential Search Committee. Peare earned two degrees at WSU. He also serves on the WSU Foundation Board of Directors and National Advisory Council. Regent Allen Schmidt will represent the board on the committee alongside Regent CEO and President Blake Flanders. The other committee members include: Rija Khan, WSU Student Body president Corinthian Kelly, WSU Graduate Student Council representative Sierra Bonn, a senior at Wichita State studying Engineering Technology Management
