Letter: Incinerator is not what we need

Councillor Schmitt’s comments about incineration in her recent letter (Times, April 1) are deeply troubling and outdated. The complacency and inability to address/comprehend the scale of effort required to mitigate just the NEW 600,000 tonnes CO2 a year from Rivenhall incinerator is jaw-dropping. High-profile (and expensive) efforts to boost recycling are undermined by the cabinet member for environment and place talking positively about incineration in the same breath. Only landfill and incineration? There are now multiple technologies that fragment non-recyclable waste for integration within new building products – Essex County Council is looking at this approach for its own roads. Landfill represents good ‘carbon capture’ after organic waste and recyclables are removed. Burning just releases CO2 and other nasties into the atmosphere and produces 30 per cent toxic ash for landfill.

Pedmore residents fear green belt is at risk of development

RESIDENTS in Pedmore are gearing up for a fight to try to protect a slice of countryside near their homes after discovering it has been put forward as a possible development site for 85 to 100 new homes. William Davis Homes has put together a vision document outlining a development plan to build on green belt land off Bromwich Lane, which backs onto Cherrington Gardens. The 4.2-hectare field is currently used as a horse paddock but it has been put forward in a call to sites exercise being carried out by local councils as part of work to create a new Black Country Plan which will set out housing development sites of the future and which, if any, green belt land is to be released to accommodate new homes to meet the demand for housing.
