Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 16 : Shocked by the setback in the recent local body elections, the state Congress is in firefighting mode and is planning to plug all the loopholes before the Assembly polls in 2021.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has summoned Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mullappally Ramachandran, former Chief Minister Oomen Chandy and Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala to Delhi for a meeting on Monday.
Chennithala was the chief ministerial candidate of the party even though there was no official announcement. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national secretariat demanded that all NRIs across the world should be allowed to cast their votes in the country.
A resolution adopted by the secretariat, which met here on Saturday, demanded that voting right should be ensured to all NRIs living in all continents. The secretariat alleged that there was an effort behind the curtain to offer discriminatory voting rights to overseas voters that would deny the NRIs in the Gulf countries of the right to vote.

The Muslim League has taken a major decision to field Kunhalikutty in the ensuing Assembly elections after he quits his Lok Sabha seat.
The recent local body elections have created a dent in the traditional United Democratic Front (UDF) vote bank in Central Kerala. The exit of Kerala Congress (Mani) from the UDF and switching over to the Left Front has led to a major reduction in the traditional vote bank of the UDF, which was predominantly Christian votes.
