WMUK s Gordon Bolar reviews the Face Off Theatre Company s production of Pipeline
The “pipeline” referenced in the title of Dominique Morisseau’s play is the system that disproportionately incarcerates young men of color for offenses in public or private schools.
Rather than examine the system itself, Morisseau focuses on the distress of two individuals: Nya, a single mother who teaches in an inner-city school, and her son, Omari, a student whose future is jeopardized by a fight he starts in class. The result is a riveting, stunning, and beautifully acted production, directed by Marissa Harrington, that yields insights into the values and choices made by an African American family trying to cope with an educational system that threatens to destroy them.
An interview with Marissa Harrington and Delanti Hall.
News about the Pipeline auditions traveled quickly among the theater majors at Western Michigan University and Hall found himself preparing to land the role in just a few days. Harrington, who is the director, was impressed when Hall and two other WMU theater students came to the audition with their parts almost memorized. She also points out that the playwright took some of her inspiration from real life: Morisseau s mother taught in public schools, like Omari s mother in the play. Morisseau is from Detroit.
Showtimes at the Dormouse Theatre are at 7:30 pm Friday, July 16, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm Saturday, July 17, and 2:00 pm Sunday, July 18.
WMUK s Gordon Bolar reviews the Farmers Alley Theatre production of She Persisted
The origins of the musical “She Persisted” can be traced to a children’s book of the same name by Chelsea Clinton. Before that, credit for the phrase goes to then Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for his comment regarding the actions of fellow Senator Elizabeth Warren.
But politics isn’t the central focus of this one-hour musical, which is designed for families and children. Instead, this uplifting show challenges Naomi, a young African American fourth grader on a tour of a historical museum, to consider the lives of courageous women who preceded her.
