EASTON The Talbot County Council accepted a $45,000 donation from an anonymous donor on Dec. 15 to help small businesses. The money will be sent to the Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism department to support the local economy as federal stimulus money expires and empties.
Cassandra Vanhooser, the director of the Economic Development and Tourism department, told the council that a small family foundation contacted her to donate money through the Mid-Shore Community Foundation for the county to use. I thought that was a fantastic idea because we are running out of CARES funds and that expires at the end of the year, she said, referring to the U.S. Congress relief package that passed in the spring.
EASTON â Former Talbot County Council President Corey Pack has relinquished his post to successor Chuck Callahan, and while the transition of power was smooth, itâs clear a new dynamic is forming among the group of county lawmakers.
Callahan, who was elected president for the coming year by a majority vote of the council in November, has been at the helm over a week now and just led his second council meeting Tuesday, Dec. 15.
The new council president appears to still be shedding the skin of his vice presidency â often heeding on-the-spot procedural advice from Pack during council meetings. But heâs gradually molding his own leadership style and has shown heâs not going to be shy about asserting his authority.

EASTON â The Talbot County Council on Tuesday gave engineering company Davis, Bowen and Friedel the go-ahead to begin planning the design and build of a proposed gymnasium-auditorium expansion to the Talbot County Community Center in Easton.
The council unanimously approved the contract, in the amount of $255,900, for the company to begin planning the project. County Manager Andy Hollis said the costs are eligible for reimbursement from the Maryland Department of Natural Resourcesâ Program Open Space.
The gym-auditorium is anticipated to be a âvery large roomâ that will accommodate indoor activities, such as pickleball, volleyball and basketball, as well as other social events. The space is also slated to include two bathrooms and a storage area, which will be used to house equipment for the entire community center.
