BELTON â James Stapler believes it is important to understand how the United States got to where it is today.
To do so, the criminal defense attorney said it is best to reference defining documents from the nationâs roots â a suggestion he and his colleagues follow annually with the Declaration of Independence.
âI just think itâs important,â Stapler told the Telegram. âMost people havenât heard (the Declaration of Independence) ⦠but back in the day (public) readings were how people would hear about things.â
On Friday, Stapler and nine other local members of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association recited the Declaration of Independence followed by the Bill of Rights at the Bell County Justice Center, 1201 Huey Road in Belton.

A Texas army sergeant who shot and killed a legally armed protester at an anti-police violence demonstration in Austin last year has been indicted on murder and aggravated assault charges, Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza said in a press conference Thursday.
Army Sgt. Daniel Perry was booked and released on a $300,000 bond after turning himself in, according to Kristen Dark, a spokeswoman for the Travis County Sheriff s Office.
A Travis County grand jury indicted Perry on charges of murder, aggravated assault and deadly conduct after he shot and killed Garrett Foster, 28 on July 25, 2020.
Itâs a tradition that Texas lawyers have conducted for many years.
The effort is organized by the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, which holds public readings of the Declaration of Independence across the state just before the Fourth of July is celebrated.
âWe are proud to emphasize the patriotism associated with Independence Day,â association President Grant Scheiner, a Houston resident, said in a news release. âTCDLA recognizes the Declaration of Independence as a bedrock document that not only liberated the colonies but eventually led to the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the American rule of law â concepts criminal defense lawyers use every day to protect individual liberties in courthouses across the land.â
