It’s the summer of 2020. The entire world is in shambles. School might not even reopen in the fall. And a high school football season? That’s just a wild dream.
Senior year might not go to plan, but a future outside of Sumter, SC, awaits Justus Boone.
So, while most people his age were still sound asleep in their beds, Florida’s freshman defensive lineman had already been training for hours. His principal regularly passed him running on the side of the road while on his 7 a.m. drive to work.
And when his high school coach saw him in the fall, he immediately knew Boone put the work in over the summer. Coach Mark Barnes could not see his players at all from the time of the shutdown in March until mid-August. Without summer workouts, he had no idea what to expect.

Dan Mullen is about to enter his 13th season as a head football coach. He has grown and evolved over the years as anyone who wants to excel at a profession must.
If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed about him, however, it’s a demonstrated preference for experience and seniority. At almost every position on the field, the older players tend to start and play ahead of the younger ones.
Mullen of late has gotten good about rotating youth into the lineup at opportune times to minimize the number of experience cliffs caused by graduation and draft declarations. He also isn’t completely strict about following seniority to the exclusion of all else, as can be seen by some of the oldest players on the roster like Rick Wells and T.J. Moore solely serving as reserves so far. On the flip side of the equation, Ethan White got to play as a true freshman late in 2019 despite older interior linemen being around.

Every bad habit the Gators have this year came back to bite them on Saturday night. There was some bad luck involved, but not so much that it swung the game. UF doing subpar things that have been subpar all year is what made it close enough for the Tigers to steal a victory.
Offensive line
The offensive line hasn’t been good for two years running. It’s been obvious for two years running that Jean Delance is not an SEC-caliber player. Dan Mullen finally benched him to see what a different lineup would look like, but then Stewart Reese promptly became the obvious weak link.
