DAYTONA BEACH Orlando developer Beat Kahli confirmed plans to break ground on the first phase of his massive Avalon Park Daytona Beach development here in the second half of this year.
The native of Switzerland also expects to soon complete his purchase of 6,200 acres of timberland on the other side of Tiger Bay State Forest for his development. He hopes to build a 300-megawatt solar farm, pending regulatory approval.

PANAMA CITY BEACH Interested applicants can now tour Latitude Margaritaville Watersound before its homes hit the market in May.
Geared toward those 55 years old and older, the Jimmy Buffett-inspired community is being built along State 79 near its intersection with State 388 through a partnership between the St. Joe Company, Margaritaville Holdings and Minto Communities USA.
While the area remained an active construction site Tuesday, the community s sales center and more than a dozen island-styled model homes were open to tour. The sales center featured beach-themed walkways that smelled of coconuts, as well as interactive monitors for guests to design their preferred home layout.
DAYTONA BEACH Construction work has begun on a new community here aimed at helping to alleviate the area s housing shortage by offering single-family and duplex homes available to rent, as opposed to being available to purchase.
The planned 283-home The Cottages at Daytona Beach is the first of its kind in the area, according to John Albright, the CEO of CTO Realty Growth Inc. We are excited to see this type of high-quality single-family rental product coming to Daytona Beach, he said.
The Cottages at Daytona Beach will help address the need for more available homes, but they won t be cheap. Rental rates are expected in the $1,500-to-$2,000-a-month range.
