Shooting are marching in the State Capitol to press lawmakers to take more action on gun control. Hundreds gathering there demanding change and what they want a future where Mass Shootings are a thing of the past. Many would like to blame this event on the fbis lack of action or the Trump Administration but the simple fact is that the laws of our beloved country allowed for a deranged gunman to purchase a gun legally. Meanwhile back in parkland hundreds of students walking out in protest. They are rallying at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to show support for gun control legislation. Meantime local students standing in unity with those in florida walked out of their classrooms today. Fox 29s jeff cole is live in voorhees, new jersey, camden, county, tonight with more on that. Walkouts including one here in voorhees as students try to end the violence as School Administrators rethink School Security. Police cruisers lights flashing cops on foot all in front of voorhees eastern regional high school. Not for a School Shooting but a student rally to remember the 17 slaughtered in parkland, florida. Kids and parents, theyre coming to school not feeling good, not feeling safe and it should be a safe environment. Reporter as students voiced their concerns and fears the debate grows on how best to defend children in classrooms from crazed killers with military weapons. Its scary. Its scary from the time i started this career to where were at now. Reporter in this Regional School of 1900, theres an armed cop at the front door and two roaming the corridors but some wonder if even thats enough. Should teachers or administrators take up arms ready to shoot it out with a gunman. Upper darbys Police Superintendent has throated the idea. Reporter . In the majority of cases there have been red flags, warning signs such as social media postings or comments to fellow students. Reporter a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Teachers Union says in poor communities violence creeps into schools from neighborhoods wracked with gun violence. We live with it daily he says but now kids are pushing back. Are you fearful . Are you scared. Personally no, like ive had incidents in my life but im used to it. Reporter but others are. Others are. The rain is coming tonight and maybe even a rumble of thunder this evening and that is going to bust the heat. Its back to the realities of the Delaware Valley. Low temperatures in the 40s tonight. Hang now an investigation into what started the deadly fire in Delaware County. Massive flames engulfed the home on pitman avenue this morning trapping the 65yearold homeowner inside. The fire was so large it was a startling wakeup call for neighbors. Fox 29s dawn timoney is live at the scene in collingdale tonight with the details. Dawn. Reporter iain fire officials are still trying to figure out how this terrible fire started but take a look. You can see theres really nothing left of this home. The scene is still smoking. The fire was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived. The house was starting to collapse and sadly when crews finally got it under control, they found the homeowner dead inside. All you hear was boom, flames all over. Reporter patricia kuma capturing the frightening scene on cell phone camera just after 6 oclock this morning, her neighbors home on the 900 block of pitman avenue in collingdale consumed by flames. Oh, i was very scared. Reporter and with good reason. The fire raging out of control. Fire roaring out of every window. Every window there was fire just pouring out. Reporter colin ball lives right across the street and also heard a very loud bang. Then he says the home erupted into a ball of fire. And then when i heard another bang as i came outside, you just saw out the front door just a big gulf. Reporter ball has lived on this block for 24 years and feared like many neighbors the homeowner, a retired postal worker was trapped inside. I just was thinking maybe i could go in and help but it was too bad. Reporter the flames so fierce sadly long time resident 65yearold michael alsees pictured with his granddaughter alexandria did not make it out. It took 80 minutes to get the flames under control. It was about 11 40 when police say crews found him buried in the rubble. He was a cool guy, just was very quiet, to himself. Reporter firefighters say this was a tough one, part of the home collapsing as crews arrived on the scene, flames shooting across the street and jumping to the house next door. My house was on fire. The roof and everything. They said they could feel the heat from that house all the way to the trolley tracks. Reporter ray was driving his wife to the train station when he got the news. This is the second time hes lost everything to fire. Back in 1985, his apartment went up in flames. Once you go through it, its like it doesnt leave you. Just like the first time, got nothing but what we got on. Reporter well, of course, ray and his wife are thankful to be alive. The victims family did not want to talk to us on camera but they had an important message. Theyre urging people to check to make sure their smoke alarms work. They did not work in this house. The victims family hoping that if you check yours, maybe it will save a life. Iain. Dawn, thank you. Well, police in Montgomery County are looking for whomever stabbed a pregnant woman to death while her two children were in the apartment. Cheltenham Township Police say they were called to matters way in the linwood gardens apartment in elkins park for an argument. When police got there they found 31yearold ebony white stabbed several times in her bedroom. White and her unborn son were dead at the scene. Investigators say her 12yearold and sevenyearold what inside the apartment during the stabbing but they were not physically hurt. Beer and wine sales have practically become a staple in super markets as pennsylvania liberalizes its liquor laws but in one Delaware County community a more than half century old document could put the brakes on beer. Bruce gordon joins us live in nether providence township. Reporter beer and wine sales may yet come to pass but not without the stamp of approval from neighbors who are given a whole lot of power over this issue by folks who lived around here nearly 60 years ago. Bill levin spent part of this picture perfect day washing his 2017 corvette in the drive way of his surrey road home. The vet packs a lot of power but not as much as levins. Reporter at issue is a plan by the nearby acme supermarket on Baltimore Pike at beatty road to sell beer and wine. Its a growing trend in markets and Convenience Stores all over our region. Acme itself sells the stuff at 23 of its other locations. But this store is different. And heres why. A 1959 deed restriction entered into by the land owner and 30 homeowners from the Bowling Green subdivision next door bans the sale of alcoholic beverages on the site. Acme now has a Liquor License but needs the unanimous approval of neighbors to put it to use. Gary cummings is nether providence township manager. Because of that document the neighbors are holding all the card here arent they. They are, they are. Acme acme representative actually indicated that the neighbors trump everything else. Reporter cummings says he believes neighbors could be persuaded to allow beer and wine sales but may demand that acme make improvements to a store that has its own people admit seen better days. He says for example they may ask for security cameras behind the store along the border with Bowling Green. They also, because they are holding, you know, holing the cards there, they want estheticiaaesthetic improvement. They tell me theyve had problems with the strip Shopping Center in the past mainly restaurants that stunk up the neighborhood. Theyll think long and hard before agreeing to let acme sell six packs and chardonnay. If its going to be done you want it done right. Absolutely. We want it done right. This is our neighborhood and its a great neighborhood and we want to keep it that way. Reporter and acme spokesman has been quoted as telling residents that the company has a clean record of legal and efficient sale of beer and wine at their other locations. A spokesman told us today by written statement the Company Looks forward to continuing to working with more communities so that customers in those areas will have that same level of convenience. Traffic started to pile up behind that crash site. Northbound lanes of the turnpike were shut down between lansdale and quakertown interchange but they have since reopened. Five people were hurt. He was in contact with me on a friday and we thought he could make it the weekend and then you were in contact with me over the weekend and it was back. All of a sudden i pushed this and it has like 20,000 within the first couple hours and i never expected it to, one, go that fast and get that large and now its at over a hundred thousand likes and 20,000 retweets. This one person went out to buy a backpack and she literally bought all of these new clothing for him, put her own money and effort into donating and i have a woman who told me that she works for Shoe Department and theyre going to donate shoes. The freehold board filing a groundbreaking lawsuit today against the Drug Companies owners and manufacturers that ignited the epidemic. In the lawsuit it claims those companies knowingly marketed highly addictive narcotics to those throughout the nation including in our area and one recovering addict talked about how serious the problem is. Still ahead a scary morning in a local neighborhood. Two people pistol whipped by a guy police say broke into their home looking for money and drugs and it didnt end there. An investigation is under way into the cause of a house fire in Upper Providence Delaware County. The two alarm fire broke out at the home on the 900 block of north orrin street just before 7 00 this morning. Firefighters had to battle smoky conditions but they were able to get the flames under control quickly. Everyone was able to get out of the home safely. A 29yearold man arrested for sexually assaulting a nineyearold girl. Philadelphia police say they arrested Hassan Harold for the crime. Yesterday police say they got a call about a nineyearold awoken in the middle of the night to someone sexually assaulting her. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to be okay. Tonight police have charged harold with rape and aggravated assault. The search is an on for a driver who hit a woman with her car and took off. She was hit at the intersection of pulaski avenue and hunting park in nicetown. The woman was taken to a hospital for a broken arm. So far police have no description of the vehicle. Fbi officers in bensalem performing a mysterious investigation. Investigator its spending their day in cedar court. You can see that many searching through a wooded area next to the highway with metal detectors. The fbi says that they were carrying out a Court Authorized Law Enforcement Activity but wouldnt say what for. Scary moments early this morning for residents in the citys feltonville area. Police say a gunman burst into two apartments on roosevelt boulevard. They say the suspect pistol whipped a man who then played dead as the gunman ransacked the apartment. The suspect then fired shots at him as he made a run for it but the suspect twic burst intoa womans apartment pistol whipped her and demanded drugs and some and. This woman you could see by the apartment that she was settled in her apartment watching television and reading an open bible on her bed and she has to endure this in the confines of her own home. So far there have been no arrests. Deputies in los angeles may have that prevented a student plot to open fire at el camino high school. Police went to the School Friday after a School Security officer says that they overheard a disgruntled student threatening a School Shooting. Investigators say they found a collection of weapons and ballistic evidence at the students home. The threat came just two days after the florida high School Shooting that killed 17 people. Investigators say hargrove made threats to harm people at Church Sunday morning during services at the Beulah Tabernacle church. Students staged protests and walkouts demanding action on gun control. Pretty significant weather today indeed. 58 degrees in the poconos right now. 79 in reading and lancaster. 76 in wilmington. 76 in dover and 75 degrees still in trenton. As we look throughout the northeast you can see the cold is coming cooling down with rain through the central parts of pa and behind a front look at pittsburgh, only 48 degrees. In cleveland its 35 and in toronto its 37 so this is the cold thats coming behind a front. And associated with the front some showers, some showers maybe even a rumble of thunder this evening or overnight. This is just the beginning of a weather rut. Scott has more on that. Hey, scott. Hi there kathy. Yeah, get ready to grab the rain gear. Not only for thursday but as we move into friday, saturday, even sunday, well be watching for the threat of some showers. So, its really been a wet month of february. Take a look at the rainfall this month Atlantic City almost 6inches of rain, philadelphia weve seen 5inches of rain so far this month. Look at the forecast the next several days. Cooler with showers, upper 40s for thursday, upper 40s on your friday, another chance for rainfall right through the upcoming weekend but temperatures will moderate. Well go hour by hour. Thursday were looking at clouds and showers. Friday were looking at clouds, showers, maybe even cold enough for a little bit of sleet for the pocono mountain to the lehigh valley. Well watch those temperatures. For the weekend it stays unsettled. So, just the rain train, areas of low pressure will kind of ride along a stalled out boundary, lifting the atmosphere so by tomorrow, maybe about a half inch. As we mover toward friday well continue to add onto that. By saturday, a little over an inch and by sunday, look at that, were talking about almost 2inches of rainfall over the next several days. A far cry from temperatures in the 60s to around 70 today for a high in the mountains. During the day tomorrow much different indeed. Periods of rain, much cooler, the temperature only 49 with northeasterly winds 10 to 15 miles an hour and its all about the wind. Todays southwesterly wind soaring, feels like summer and by tomorrow it will definitely feel like winter again. Take a look at your sevenday forecast. Were looking at occasional showers thursday, staying unsettled friday. Saturday a few showers. This is going to be the driest day of the stretch. It happened around 8 30 this morning in little rock. Crews drove a high water four by four to reach the bus trapped in those waters. Crews did rescue the 17 middle and High School Students and the bus driver. Thankfully no one was hurt. A major announcement by philadelphia d. A. Larry krasner today. Cash bail is no more. The d. A. Says theyll no longer ask for cash bail for those low level offenses. Krasner says the initiative is to help those who cant afford to post the bail right away. Specifically, poor and minorities. He says this will also save taxpayers money because it will allow defendants to maintain their freedom instead of sitting in jail. Members of the north Philadelphia Community praised his decision. This may be one small step for the city at large but its a major step for the members of my community, so we thank all of you who framed this process and have brought us to this point. We dont know yet when that change will go into effect. Curious cat got stuck inside a Garbage Disposal over the weekend so it was Chester County police to the rescue with some tools and a little bit of coconut oil tredyffrin Township Police were able to disassemble the disposal and get the cat out of there in about an hour. Im going to be employing people and most of them are going to be from jenkintown because, again, that type of business is mostly young people. Reporter taco bells franchisee and borough Officials Say the plan would bring 32 new jobs to town increase sagging tax revenue and give a shot in the arm to local schools. If we dont support Business Development to help our school, which is the cornerstone, if we dont believe in our Public School system, then people are not coming here. Reporter but some say this isnt what the borough needs. How many people think youre going to have someone employed by taco bell . Reporter critics think a drive through thats opened until 2 00 a. M. Isnt the right fit. A petition has been started with more than 300 signatures to stop the plan from moving forward. My wife and i walk around town every evening. Reporter residents say a plan like this would ruin one of the boroughs biggest features, walk ability. Back to the deadly School Shooting in florida now. A week after 17 people lost their lives, the memorial is still growing outside the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in parkland florida. Its difficult to deal with the tragedy and if its one like last weeks in florida, the School Shooting, you dont have to know anyone involved to be deeply involved. Shes doing graphite on paper portraits of each of the parkland shooting victims portraits that will eventually find their way to grieving families. Its forgotten about people next week but these people have to live with this for the rest of their lives. Every time they look at this picture i want them to remember that someone cared. Miss davis had done portraits memorializing 9 11 firefighters children killed at sandy hook, victims of the Charleston Church shooting but this particular tragedy took a son of easton among the 17 killed chris hixon is from the south side, his parents still live in town. This oneyearold was just diagnosed with the rare allergy. It causes little ivy to break out in severe hives and her parents say doctors told them that she might be the youngest person ever to be diagnosed with the condition. As a father it absolutely breaks your heart. I thought about is she ever going to be able to go to day care, is she ever going to be able to go to Public School, is she going to ever be able to go into the ocean. The couple says ivy can only be in the water for about 15 seconds before her skin starts to burn and develop blisters. Experts say to minimize the reactions the family needs to purchase if i their water and get central air so ivy doesnt overheat. Reporter after seeing a Fundraising Initiative out of new york christia carrera was motivated to get involved to raise money for inner city kids to see the movie. Shes not a teacher, she doesnt have kids she just saw a chance to help. A lot of it was just because i wanted to do something nice like you look at the news, theres terrible news every single day so our kids kind of deserve more than that. Reporter christinas involvement is a perfect example of helping people not having to be that complicated. She just put up a goepp fund me and started spreading the word. It started slowly but as word got out, it blew up. Literally went from 1200 to 7,000 to almost 11,000 like, less than a week. Reporter unfortunately this hasnt been all positive. With something as simple as donating to inner city students, theres still been social media critics that have been flatout hateful i am hispanic but im very light skinned so i often get mistaken for white so i got a lot of like hatred directed at me of like, oh, well, youre a white person, why are you doing this, dont you care about white people. Reporter the criticism stung but it was also a learning experience for christina. She learned first to keep moving forward even if the face of haters and second, that if you do, the voice of positive will usually drown them out. As the campaign kind of goes on, its a lot easier to shake them off. Because for everyone person who is incredibly nasty, theres so many more who are so, so, so supportive. Wakanda forever.
