Maybe theyre not as good as they thought they would be, or the timing so from soccer, piano lessons, dance, you are ad all can fill up quickly. You want your kids to be active. But what if look i dont want to do there is i dont want to play soccer any more, mom. Do you tell them to quit or keep going . As a parent i want to know that. Why does my kid want to quit this activity they used to love. What if it is more social, my friends arent involved in there is or im just got good enough, i want to do something im good at . So i think thats a good point. You want your kids to feel confident. But we want to try to help kids have a growth mindset. Which means, like being a little more optimistic, maybe if i cant do it now maybe i can get better f we quit as feel as we stink, we will never get better. So install like character traits like grits, and a growth mindset to help them get there. So if you want to do that, then how do you know when it is time to pull the plug actually is. Real good question. I think depends on every situation. But i also think you want to look at the personality trait of the child. So if you have a kid who is doing 75 different activities, and they want to be perfect at everything, maybe the grades are suffering, because theyre doing five after School Activities, maybe it is okay to pull the plug on one or two of those. What about this . I know i was just telling thomas i have twine neices, the same people but not really. Is it okay sometimes for parents to sort of stick to kids in the same sport, even though they might not like them because it is easier for parents to drop them off you know what i mean . I think that maybe sometimes those things feel big when youre seven or ten years old, but essentially being committed anything, one hard thing, and sticking through until the end t can be really important value lesson. It makes me think, when i was growing up i was big into basketball. It is all i d my dad, we had a court in the backyards, you know like the little basket you put up. We play in the driveway. I went to him, look, im not growing, dad, this is probably not going to work out. And it was really hard for him to take that, but he did tell me, look, if you dont think basketball is for you thats fine, but you need to do something and stick with something. Thats his thing, what are we doing next, and i ended up doing track, but you need to find something and stick with it, is that the me . I think your dad was onto something. I think you want to find something, stick with something you like, but also maybe even have one hard task, one activity, one thing youre committed to that maybe you dont love but see it through to the end. Not have like five hard things, maybe one hard thing. How do you know youre not putting too much pressure on your child . Well i think not being reactive, and not being oh, youre not quit that, what are you talking about, actually showing them that youre hearing them and saying okay, like, lets check back in two weeks see how do you.
