As a matter of fact, thats what were talking about today. The rain has already come through, some of it has already come through. We do have more mild showers around today. Temperatures are in the 40s and the 50s right now. Were going to warm up today. Were going to head up to 60 degrees plus for almost the entire area by this afternoon. All right, looking at Storm Tracker radar right now, it looks pretty dry, okay, at least here in the city. If youre out early, early this morning, you get on the roads theres a lot of road spray still out there this morning. Look at the past couple of hours. Most of the showers have been to the north of us and northwestern suburbs this morning. Well have the possibility, kind of periods of showers today but i think most of the rain will come through again later on this afternoon. Heres why. You canee to the west and northwest of us, yes, there is some snow on the radar up through the midwest and down through parts of saint louis this morning coming into illinois but i think that its going to be just too little too late for us to have any type of a White Christmas. Later today, whew, 64 degrees for a High Temperature. Thats not normal. Manassas the same, culpeper the same and down to fredericksburg right around 66 degrees. These temperatures now, look, it could be a little warmer in spots than this. So, 64 for us. We maybe were 65 to 66 degrees. It all depends on how much in the way of shower activity we have coming on across. And fredericksburg could be maybe 68 or so. Again, all dependent on the rain and the timing and when it comes through. It will be getting cooler. As a matter of fact, it will be getting much colder. Thats the trend anyway. Theyre leaving early trying to get out ahead of the crowds but already people are building here at Reagan National airport. This of course is the third record day in a row of traveling in the country. Aaa saying more than 107 Million People, again, thats a record, are traveling between thursday and january 1st, thats up 3. 1 percent from last year. Of course most people traveling by car but here in the d. C. Area around a Million People will be flying. And analysts are crediting the boom in travel for a Strong Economy this year. Experts also saying even though were dealing with higher gas prices, believe it or not, airfare prices and hotel rates are actually cheaper than in years past. So, this makes people more inclined to get away and obviously a lot of people here. Weve got some folks bundled up, of course, its a cold day here but we have spotted some folks in shorts and tropical dresses, so maybe theyre going somewhere wm. Them. Oh, well. I do want to mention traveling on the roads today is going to be busy as well. So far so good as we saw driving up here to the airport. Weve also been tracking some breaking news from overnight. Fire crews have worked through the night to put out a massive fire on 21st street in southeast d. C. Fire of the the flames erupted from the second floor of a townhome and fire crews say the flames were so big that they jumped 20 feet across the yard and spread to another home. The first townhome is destroyed. The second is salvageable thanks to indoor sprinklers working. The red cross is helping nine people displaced by the fires. Thankfully n no to you a developing story overnight in Prince Georges County. Police investigating the deadly shooting of a young girl. It happened at 9 oclock last night on Saint Phillips road. Officers say the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. They are now trying to figure out what led up to this shooting. And we are also learning new details about a double murder in reston, virginia. Police have identified the victims as Scott Fricker and his wife Buckley Kuehne fricker. They were found dead on a home. A third person in the house was shot and remains in critical condition. Several other people were inside the home at the time. Neighbors say the couple had three children and police have not identified a suspect in this case but say there is no danger to the community. New this morning out of california the thomas fire is now the largest wildfire in california history. Firefighters have been working around the clock for three weeks now to battle the flames out west. The fire has now scorched more than thats larger than the size of new york city and two people were killed in the fire and there have been Widespread Evacuations throughout southern california. Now, right now, the fire is only about 65 percent contained. Meanwhile we have an update on another fire that happened in suitland, maryland, earlier this week. That fire ripped through Carriage Hill apartments forcing multiple families out of their homes days before christmas. This morning the Prince Georges County Police Department and the red cross will be giving out toys and presents ahead of Christmas Eve to those families. Five people were hurt in that fire. The cause is still being investigated. Its again the biggest tax cut, biggest reform of all time. President trump kept his promise to sign that massive tax reform bill into law before christmas. The biggest tax code cover hall in decades is officially signed into law. He says people will be pleased because it will put more money in peoples pockets and will reenergize the economy. Agents raided his home and found guns an will tha said he wanted to die in the attack. Now agents first started tracking the marine after he expressed support for isis on facebook. Now to green bay, wisconsin where a disgruntled former Food Service Employee at Lambeau Field is accused of ramming his car into a loading dock. Thst green bay packers. In the video you can see the suspects minivan on top of other vehicles. Police say no one was hurt in this incident. The packers meanwhile were able to keep the rest of the stadium opened because the incident happened in an isolated area of the stadium. And someone is scamming a running a scam on instagram pretending to be Oprah Winfrey. Oprah warned fans about the imposter. Somebody out there is trying to scam you using my name is my avatar on social media asking for money if you sign up for an own account on instagram. Its a fraud its a fraud, oprah says she has been in contact with instagram and they are working to deactivate all fraudulent accounts. Many people in l. A. Likely did a double take last night when they looked at the sky. Look at this. Launched from Vandenburg Air force base last night carrying 10 satellites. So, most of the showers have been going across northern maryland. There have been a couple of light showers coming up and off to the east of i95, but for the most part, theres a lot of dry conditions this morning south and to the southwest. That will change on and off today. I do suspect that were talking about periods of rain. I dont think its an all day washout today. But i definitely do believe showers and clouds for us. So, of course when its not raining its going to be cloudy. Temperatures, though, check this out. 64 degrees for a High Temperature and i may be a little bit conservative with this. Some of the modeling, believe it or not, takes us up into the upper 60s today. So, if we dont get quite as much rainfall coming on across, and again, i dont think its a lot today, i think most of it comes across this afternoon and this evening, that 64 could be a little warmer. 65, 66 would not surprise me. Much cooler tomorrow, though. The front comes through that takes temperatures down tomorrow, so even though were 64 today, were going to be almost 20 degrees cooler tomorrow. High of only about 46 degrees. It will be a little bit breezy and mostly cloudy on your Christmas Eve. Lets check on temperatures right now, shall we . 50 degrees here in town. Gaithersburg 46. Frederick is 43. So, some of these areas out north and west obviously this morning starting off cooler, but the warm air is coming up. And as the warm air comes up, it does look like its going to be enough to overtake the entire area and bring warmer temperatures. Beckley, West Virginia is 53. Pittsburgh is 51. So, thats why i say you have the warm air coming up. Look at knoxville, tennessee this morning. Already 66 degrees. Now, on the other side of the front, its not super cold but its definitely colder. Chicagos 28. Detroit is 32. So, that colder air is coming in. A lot of rain back out to the west of us. We dont escape the rain today. Well have periods of showers coming on colder air there is some snow. Could there be a flake of snow late tonight or even tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening . Yes. But it does not look like its going to be a huge deal. This morning rain is off to the west of us. Watch what happens today. Weve been talking a lot about porch pirates where that people take packages off of your porch outside your home but now were talking how to secure things inside your home. What are some of the common mistakes you see homeowners making. Well, the first is unlocked doors and windows. When it comes to windows, theres easy reason why thats occurring. Most homeowners dont realize that their windows are unlocked and i dont know if you want to ill show you how it happens. Yeah, show us. This particular window is locked right now. Right. And a lot of times people will go to unlock it, they go to shut it. Now what just happened is th uo they think theyve locked it. But not noticing that this came down. I have this type of window so what ive noticed also is that the heat escapes through the crack. And along with an unlocked window you get a constant breeze. So, people from the outside, burglars theyll test it so its very important, yo when we were taught when we were little. Always lock it. Its such a simple concept but so many of us dont do it especially also with our cars out front, too, and weve seen a lot of car robberies. Yeah. So what kind of window is this . This actually is a security glass. Okay. And what a lot of people do, they get security and tempered mixed up. Tempered glass is whats in all your doors, sliding glass doors, storm doors. Tempered glass breaks into tens of thousands of little pieces for safety reasons. The security glass, if people are interested in replacing their windows or doors and theyre focused on security, well, security glass is like a car windshield meaning it will break but it will stay intact. Its great to have either on your first floor, its great to have in your kids room, little babies where if you have the crib up against the windows they wont be able to break this and what happens is, this is a little sample piece so this little sample piece, if you loo has a piece of rubber in between it so theres two pieces of glass on here, okay. And a lot of intruders will use a little carpenters punch. What this will do is this will break tempered glass and you wont even hear it break but if you come up to the security glass and try to break it, youll see that punctures. If a burglar is going to break in normally theyre in and out of your house in 15 seconds. And if they come up here and this doesnt break they may try to hit it with a bat. Its still not going to break t then theyre making a lot of noise. If theyre smart theyre going to move on. Are you finding this is becoming more popular with people as an option. Yeah. Whats nice about this is the Fairfax County police endorse this product. We do a lot of presentations for Neighborhood Watch groups. We show this to all the homeowners so they know whats out there and they are really impressed with this type of glass because it does help keep intruders out. When theyre trying theyre making a lot of noise. Right. And of course your neighbors which they dont want to do. Exactly. Or your dog is barking. What are some simple things to betsy cure our home. First and foremost 80 percent of the breakins occur through unlocked doors and windows. Check them. Make sure theyre locked. Many times i go to homes and i can see from the outside that these windows are not locked. And ill inform the homeowner. So, thats the first and most important thing. Front doors, a great thing to add to a front door is a storm door. People dont think about storm doors being security. Its another barrier that someone has to break through to get in. Right. So, adding a storm door to your main door or even to doors on the side or the rear protects your doors from the element but also gives you another layer of security and its a visual. Someone maybe casing the neighborhood, sees a home with storm doors on it, maybe they go down the street. Uhhuh. So, its a simple addon. Simple tips we see on the screen. You s door. Trim the shrubbery so i assume robbers cant hide in them. A lot of time people have bushes against their house very high. Trim them. Get them below the window seal so you can see. And you want plenty of lights that come on on a motion sensor. Another big thing is garages. Everyone keeps their garage door opened in the car. Nothing to pop the little window with this punch open the garage and youre in the house. I was going to add on to your point about the unlocked windows and doors. Were seeing a rise in Garage Door Openers being in unlocked cars. Hacking. Hacking too. And were just going to get wave after wave of colder temperatures coming our way after today, all right. We are trending colder. Theres no doubt about it for the next couple of weeks and leading out of the year and into the new year just so you know. That still has to come through. All of this rain will come through today on and off periods of showers coming across and by later on this evening and certainly by the overnight were going to be dry and then the colder air starts moving on through. Lets get to some developing news now from overnight in Prince Georges County. Police are investigating the deadly shooting of a young girl. It happened at around 9 oclock last night on Saint Phillips road. Officers say the girl was pronounced dead at the scene and they are now trying shooting. Also new this morning, while you were sleeping, firefighters worked through the night to battle a two alarm fire on 18th street in northwest. At one point all crews had to evacuate the building because of a possible roof collapse. It took several hours to finally get the flames under control. A couple of firefighters were evaluated at the scene but we are told no injuries are reported and the cause still remains under investigation. And in Prince Georges County, the director of a shelter for victims of Domestic Violence has resigned after complaints about Living Conditions inside the home. The women in this shelter reached out to fox5 and some shared this video that youre looking at of rodent droppings inside the kitchen of the Family Crisis Center of Prince Georges County. One resident described filth and mold in the kitchen and bathrooms plus a lack of heat. The executive director sophie ford released a statement on monday denying the complaints, then three days later ford resigned. The new acting director sent us a statement saying it was an appropriate action fords [inaudible] passengers who died in a bus crash during an excursion to the mayan ruins is back in fort lauderdale. Four americans have been identified in the crash including a mother and son from lorton virginia. Cruise ship passengers describe the gruesome scene. We didnt see the bus flip now. We didnt see that. We saw it on the side of the road. We saw all the bodies laying down with blood all over them. It was not like the United States where they have ambulances everywhere. I feel sorry for the people cause there was no helicopters, there was no nothing. Set up for the local family. A total of 12 Cruise Ship Passengers were killed in tuesdays crash. And then finally what do we have here . And right here we have our spf. Its spf50 so we want to stay between a 30 and a 50 and basically use spf, make it your important. Best friend. Yeah. Thats a year round thing that you have to do. Yeah. I cant emphasize that enough. Thats a great resolution right. Im going to use spf all year long. They have so many products out now with spf that can a lot of people were concerned about the smell. Yeah. And the fragrances used in them and also how well it would do underneath your makeup. Yes. Nowadays there are so many great options, right. Yes, including makeup with spf. Yes. So that makes it easy but still even if your makeup spf make sure its at least a 30 so youre getting that uva protection which is the browning, aging br wrinkling rays. Im in my 30s. Ive never cared about skin care so much. Its now more than ever. I have this whole regimen and so my advice to those of you who have not hit 30 yet, start today. I mean, i put on so much stuff just to protect the skin, especially spf, that is so whether or not. What spf would you recommend like 35 or 50. Between a 30 to 50 is excellent. Going above a 50 is unnecessary because it doesnt stay on as long and it doesnt give you as much protection as you think. I never knew that. Below a 30 doesnt protect you against the aging rays enough for you to really notice that difference so using spf on a daily basis at the age of 18, 20 is really recmmended cause you lose 1 percent collagen in your skin after the age of 20 every year so thats when you hit your 30s, 10 years have passed and you importantly enough, the snow reflects 80 percent of the sunlight, sand real flex 20 percent. Hm. So, that being said, winter months its even more important. And we do see that cause we squint a little more when it snows and theres snow on the ground. Okay. Yes. And of course water is good. But one thing looks to be true is even though we have the clouds, even though we have the showers, wow, i mean, it is really going to be mild for a time today as temperatures for just about everybody jump up to 60 plus degrees for High Temperatures. Now, im not telling you all afternoon is going to be 63 to 66 degrees. Theres still cool air kind of wedged in place from winchester over to martinsburg and hagerstown. Temperatures there still in the 30s and the low 40s. I do anticipate that eventually we get enough warm air coming up that just about everybody will get in the 60s and the 50s, okay. Im not guaranteeing that northwestern neighborhoods get into the upper 50 60 degrees. I dont think thats going to happen. Storm tracker radar right now does show you where the rain is. Pretty moderate shower activity up around are harrisburg pennsylvania. A few little showers earlier passed through the hagerstown area, Frederick County. I want to take you back three hours or so just to kind of give you an idea how this rain has been tracking. Early this morning more rain for northern maryland. Little sliver came through frederick and now northern parts of harold and Carroll County now but we will its not an all day washout. Its not going to rain all day long. Most of this rain is still well back out to the west of us. Its riding up on some way from the gulf of mexico. Later on today i think is our best chance to get showers for everybody or more widespread coming on through but until then, were just talking about temperatures warming up. 64 degrees here in town. Most people, of course, going by car, and analysts are saying that this big boom in travel that were experiencing this year is from our Strong Economy. Experts also saying even though we have higher gas prices right now, surprisingly airfare prices and hotel rates are cheaper than in years passed. More people, of course, inclined to get away and that might be why were seeing so many Airline Travelers this year. While it is always expensive to travel by air apparently its cheaper than in years past. I do want to say, though, guys, even though things are looking good, dont be misled. We have seen crowds here all morning long and, again, this is supposed to be a record travel day. The earlier you get out, the better. Im assuming this is probably the best Reagan National airports going the look throughout the day because we were already seeing some flight delays both with departures and actually more on the arrivals seeing a lot of red up there on the arrivals board. Were also tracking some breaking news. Fire crews investigating a massive fire on 21st street in southeast d. C. Take a look at some of these pictures twe tweeted out by d. C. Fire. The flames erupted from the second floor avenue townhome. The flames were so big they jumped 20 feet and spread to another townhome nearby. The back of the first townhome is destroyed. The second is salvageable thanks to indoor sprinklers. The red cross is helping nine people who were displaced by the fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Now to a developing story overnight in Prince Georges County. Police there investigating the deadly shooting of a young girl around 9 oclock last night on Saint Phillips road. Officers say the girl was pronounced dead at the scene and they are now trying to figure out what led up to the fatal shooting. New this morning out of california. The thomas fire is wildfire in california history. Firefighters have been working around the clock for three weeks to battle the flames. The fire has scorched more than 273,000 acres. Thats larger than the size of new york city. Two people were killed in the fire and there have been Widespread Evacuations throughout southern california. Right now the fire is only about 65 percent contained. Meanwhile we also have an update on that fire that happened in suitland, maryland, a little closer to home. It happened earlier this week. The blaze ripped through Carriage Hill apartments forcing multiple families out of their homes just days before christmas and this morning the Prince Georges County Police Department along with the red cross will be giving out toys and presents ahead of Christmas Eve to those families. Five people were hurt in that fire. The cause is still being investigated. This is, again, the biggest tax cut, biggest reform of all time. Thats President Trump. He kept his promise to sign that massive tax reform bill it is officially signed into law. He says people will be pleased because it will put money in peoples pockets and will energize the economy. The big picture here, the east coast, as all this rain is riding up into the coldest of the air, theres a little bit of a wintry mix for new york state and new england too and on the backside over the front its much colder there so that means snow is spreading in through saint louis and coming uninto northwestern sections of ohio and through indiana as well. So, all of this is moving in our direction. Later on today i think that will be the best chance to get widespread rain but that doesnt mean we wont have a few showers possible until then. Best way to describe this would be some periods of showers until we get to later on this afternoon. I think most of what you see out here is going to start to get drug on across. Its all riding this warmer air now thats coming up from the south and the southwest and look where the cold air is. So thats producing snow up there where immediately the temperatures changed to freezing and below and theres a pretty significant band of snow for toledo, coming over towards cleveland, then down through fort wayne and then eventually into southern and central sections of illinois down there towards saint louis. So, they may have gotten enough snow to actually provide them with a White Christmas before its all said and done. Not a White Christmas for us, though. 60 degrees for gaithersburg this afternoon. 64 here in town. I think we touch it briefly, okay. And then temperatures will start coming down again in the afternoon and the evening. North and west youre probably going to stay mid to upper its really hard up here to pinpoint how much of that low level cool air gets pushed on out and the milder air comes on across but again, well be optimistic and say at least youll get into the mid to upper 50s. Earlier this morning there was a bit of a line. It looks like theres a lull now behind you. Reporter well, hey, annie, were now up at ticketing and check in so security is still pretty crowded but even though it is early, crowds have been building all morning long here. Take a look. Like i said, these are folks just coming in from getting dropped off at the airport. A lot of action up here, even more action downstairs. If youre going to be one of these people today catching a flight, maybe your Family Member is i do that want to show you up here, even though it is early, we are already seeing a little bit of red up on the departure board. Some of these flights delayed a few minutes, some of them a couple hours. I can see this flight here from charlotte delayed more than two hours here but what i really want to show you which is a little bit more concerning is actually the arrivals board over there. Look at all that red right there. Not all of those are delays. Some of those are flights coming in early but if you are on an early flight here at Reagan National airport youll want to check their flight status before heading out. We woke up early, made sure that we get through the traffic. Reporter its now a tradition almost synonymous with the holidays, waking up early and leaving plenty of time to get to your destination during one of the busiest travel times of the year. Aaa says a record 107 Million People will travel between this weekend and january 1st, up 3. 1 percent from last year. Most will travel by car. But plenty of people are opting to fly. And from boston, to chicago, dallas to l. A. , air travelers found plenty of long lines since thursday. Its snaked all the way to the back. I dont know how many people would you say . A thousand people waiting in line. Reporter analysts say the boom in travel is thanks to a Strong Economy. Reporter experts saying that even though we are seeing higher gas prices, right now, believe it or not, airfare and hotel rates are actually cheaper than in years past and thats got more people inclined to travel this Holiday Season. It happened around 9 oclock last night on Saint Phillips road. Officers say the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. They are now trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. While you were sleeping firefighters worked through the night to battle a two alarm fire on 18th street in northwest. At one point all crews had to evacuate the building because of a possible roof collapse. It took several hours to finally get the fire under control. A couple of firefighters were evaluated at the scene but we are told no injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation. And in Prince Georges County, the director of a shelter for victims of Domestic Violence has resigned after complaints about Living Conditions inside the home. The women in this shelter reached out to fox5 and they shared this video of rodent droppings inside the kitchen of the Family Crisis Center of Prince Georges County. One resident described filth and mold in the kitchen as well as bathrooms plus a lack of heat. The executive director sophie ford released a statement on monday denying the complaints. They resigned three days later. The new acting director sent fox5 a statement saying in part it was an appropriate action based on fords performance in leading the organization. And theru carrying passengers who died in a bus crash during an excursion to the mayan ruins is now back in fort lauderdale. Four americans have been identified in the crash including two killed a mother and son from lorton virginia. Cruise ship passengers described the gruesome scene. We didnt see the bus flip now. We didnt see that. We saw it on the side of the road. We saw all the bodies laying down with blood all over them. It was not like the United States where they have ambulances everywhere. I feel sorry for the people cause there was no helicopters, there was no nothing. A go fund me page has been set up for the local family. A total of 12 Cruise Ship Passengers were killed in tuesdays crash. Meanwhile a maryland man is behind bars this morning and hes accused of trespassing and stealing from local schools. Police tell us Nakym Sheffield walked into the Elizabeth Seton high school earlier this month and stole a Staff Members credit card. Detectives also linked sheffield to a number of other thefts from schools in Prince Georges County. Police arrested sheffield at his home. They also found evidence linking him to the cme are trying to beat the christmas clock. Dozens of shoppers were out and about last night. Once this front comes through later on tonight, that will shut the rain off and it will start bringing in the cooler and drier air. So, tomorrow much, much cooler. Today were in the 60s. Tomorrow were only going to be in the 40s and thats with some sunshine. Winds will be out of the northwest tomorrow so it will be a little on the cool side. If youre driving down into the carolinas, southern and southeastern virginia, a few showers down there tomorrow hung up around the frontal system. Heres what it looks like for our Holiday Weekend. Look at 1 oclock. 60 degrees there. Somewhere between 1 oclock and 4 oclock i think temperatures here in the city will actually warm up 63, 64, maybe 65 degrees for an actual High Temperature. And then well cool off a little bit later in the afternoon as the showers begin to come on across, okay. Sso, it really does look like a late day thing that most of us will start getting the rain. This morning you can see most of it stays north. 2 oclock were not perfectly dry here but still showery. Late afternoon there will be a line that comes across and it could be a burst of rain, heavier at times moving on through. That will be the front and again once the front comes through, well dry out overnight tonight. Tomorrow, kind of a mixture of clouds and sun and a whole lot colder and as we get start getting into tomorrow evening, see theres a Little Something thats trying to develop, little area of low pressure thats developing off to the east us and that may try to the colder air so Christmas Eve and early, early, Christmas Morning before santa comes along probably, there could be a flake or two.
