[ audience oohs [ applause ] this im very excited i was telling one of your stars, winston, that im going to the emiere tonight and im thrilled, because i watched get out on a screenery when were coming last time, and so i didnt get to see it with people which i feel like i mean, it was amazing, but you want to seit with people so iso excited about tonight and im particularly excited, because 20 years ago you and i were going to horror movies together yeah. Seth so this will be like the first horror movie ive gone to with you in 20 years. And you wrote and directed it. And i made it seth when did you get th idea for this one . The idea came, you know ive been terrified of the idea of doppelgangers since i was a kid. I had, you know, i always had is this vn of like seeing myself across the subway platform and just kind of thought, like, what if you saw yourself and then like, if thats not creepy enough, what if you went, like [ laughter ] you know the other you, sort of smiled at you. And so this kind of, this ideaof ike, all right whats that about . And, you know, ive been i put it the idea of a doppelganger omily, i thought was likey. Well, then my imagination went crazy, and out came this film. Seth thats so wondeul and you had a cast then who had to [ laughter ] getting ideas is wonderful [ lahter ] trust me, i know writers who dont have ideas not very happy about it. Sure. Seth you you had a cast, they obviously had to play two versions of themselves yes seth obviously, its a challenge for em was it a challenge for you as a their charactersto do both of yeah. That was i mean, i dont recommend it [ laughter ] seth yeah. Like youre doing a scene with four actors playing against its kind of like its kind of like the movie big business, but scary no big business . Bette midler and okay, well, ive forgotten [ laughter ] i dont expect you to. T. T no, its very difficul youve got to like plan it right. Lily tomlin. Seth there you go. [ cheers and applause reprent Lily Tomlin Lily tomlin all day. Represent [ laughter ] very difficult, as it turns out. And yohave on the days where our actors are the family, its like fun, and like light and then when they come in as like, ooh, you just feel thes crew just like seth yeah. Everyones just like ass drops out from under them. [ laughter ] when like lupita walks onset seth and lupita, i mean just from the poster, the first time you saw her in the poster, the evil version of her is Something Else i mean you would have to get sti pretty somehow. Seth yeah, still gorgeous, yeah you would have to give notes to her in character yeah. Set was she that kind of actor where she totally went full daniel day on this one seth yeah. [ laughter ] which is totally creepy yeah id be shed be in her dressing room alone for like hours waiting. And youd walk in, and you know she has shes doing this voice its just really scary, and really creepy. dand youd walk in, and s just be like standing in the corner like looking at you and youd be like, oh [ laughter ] and then, of course, inevitably youd give her a note, and shed have to Say Something like, you know, we ne more chex mix on craft services. [ laughter ] chex mix. I got you. [ laughter ] but no, she her performance the entire cast is brilliant she you know, has t job of playing the lead, and the main villain in this. So its kind of like shes doing like both sides of the silence of the lambs like spectacle on full its amazing to watch. Seth i cant wait. Another thing i remember you talking about with get out to sort of add levity to another movie that n you know just terrifying, but heavy in theme was you would direct sometimes as ctacy morgan, you would di sometimes as obama did you have anything you did on set here you know, it wasnt the samei of vibe, because, like when we came in, it was kind of like chilling and cool and quiet. But ere was you know, we shot the bad family first. So that the good family could react to them. And kind of know what were dealing with ana,so i was like, okay, lup im going to play your performance from yesterday shes like, oh no, you know, i cant thatll distract me. Seth oh, were you just going to like play the audio i was just going to throw the audio of her like monologue as the bad guy on, and so she was like, no, no, thatll distract me so i was like, um, okay. So tn, basically i did thats where i learned to do the voice. By like doing you know. No spoilers, but it was li you know, she starts, and shes like, once upon a time. And it was just it was like the full test of like, not reverting to key peele. Seth right [ laughter ] like hammy comedy bits. Seth yeah. cause you know we would havk had a good us ch seth right if this movie came out. [ laughter ] seth thats really the serpent eating the tail. That is seth if you guys come back for another season, and just do your movies, paries. Be awesome. [ cheers and applause all right, i like that idea seth there you go. Thats great. Seth you know, you make get out and obviously its hard because youre not a director before, and so you have those hurdles to get over. It seemed like the different set of hurdles this time is now g youre the who made get out. Did you feel that . Yeah. You feel that pressure yeah, i did you know, people were you k know, i get, youw, asked a lot everyones, eh, you know youve got a big task on your hands hereth and i returned to idea that like if i make my Favorite Movie that doesnt exist, like you knt, if people dont like i they dont like it but i can watch this movie in like 20 years, and get entertained. And so thats what i did and its a very different film but it you kn, i like it. Seth you had a screening at south by southwest, which we were saying backstage just couldnt have been more fun. So, i mean, the feeling of getting like a shudder like when that scene that you played like hits you know, at the time of the movie, you just get this great shudder. The crowd was so nice. You make this these movies with the idea that people will be yelling at the screen in the hope that theyll be, you know, laughing and screaming so when it all comes together, its like, thats its thats, you know thats the final piece of the puzzle s but in the theater, suddenly it began, immediately i understood it was an earthquake, my wife andoo i ld at each other, earthquake. We were fine at that moment, and then it seemed to intensify. And thats the point, i think, that it became more concerning. We and some other folks got up, made our way ton exit, went down several flights, exited on the street level. The intensity made me think we damage. Ounter there was no panic. One woman was sobbing and having to be consoled by her husband, as they made their way out of the theater. Now were all, you know, gathered around televisions watching the coverage here, the news conferences, trying to get an handle o this thing. I think what is alarming for a lot of people in los angeles is what if that epicenter was closer to l. A. . This quake is bigger than the dely northridge quake here back in the 90s. Its a larger magnitude than the rerld series quake in the San Francisco bay a back in the 80s. So a great deal of concern as to what would happen if it was closer to los angeles. You can certaiy understand the conversation about are we prepared is ramping up after this weekend. Lester holt, so glad you are safe. Thank you. Lets go to molly hunter, i ridgecrest, from what youve been describing, its a much different situation where you are, which is the epicenter as compared to people in l. A. And los angeles and even just a few miles away from where you are. Thas right. Ive never experienced anything like this. I was born and raised in california, i was in los angeles for that 6 on thursday, i felt the 5. 4 this morning around 4 00 a. M. , and nothing compared to the 7. 1. R hotel is just over here. Pan over so you can see the complete darkness. Were totally out of power. We were sound asleep in our hotels. Andib i cant desto you wa waking up to that kind of silent bshaking, just goingk and forth. The curtains came down, it was incredibly terrifying. Im not sure ive experienced Something Like that. And we immediately got out of bed. I was on the first floor, brian was knocked out of bed, my producer was on the second floor, things werenocked off the desk, we ran out of the hotel and went to see the housei , we know that everyone got out safely. But were at the hospital, theres an emergency command center, and everything is working asd. Planne and as prepared. Theyre incredibly ready for this. Well just have to wait and see what the fallout is. Weve all been seeg pictures of the emergency crews that youve described. Have you witnessed them searchinghe structures and taking a look at the roads . I know its dark, so i cant imagine how theyre accomplishing all of this that they need to do. But have you seen that . We saw it earlier today, because after the 5. 4, everyone was pretty freaked out. And officials said they would have to look at theuiing to see if there was damage not apparent to the naked eye. The wetry is that somng like this, the hospital, that theres internal Foundation Damage they had evacuated patients on thursday out of an abundance of caution, because of concerns there mig be structural damage. But we havent seen any emergency vehicles going door to door. Its too tdark. Nk you so much. Well have continuing coverage of this quake on no budget and we have so many sound effects in the show. We had to, sort of, do them all ourselves, really. My mom is one of them just is one of them. [ laughter ] seth shes a voice in the show ow shes a voice in the and then my sister did the sound design and theres, kind of theres like porn sounds during the show so, she had go and create those for us [ laughter ] seth not from scratch. I hope she went to the internet. Laughter ] she did go to the internet. She came in like and then the rt we, sort of, created ourselves. Seth gotcha. Were any of them hard to create or were they pretty well, theres quite a lot of talk about sex in the show and there was one point that wes wanted a, kind o sound effect that was less, sort of, fireworky than the porn sound effect so, we needed a, kind of, light, sort of, slapping noise. [ laughter ] you know you know[ ughter ] so, we couldnt work out what the right sound was. And we decided i dont know how you end in these situations but i ended up in a cupboard with my sister in the dark with my director just gently tapping my bum like this. [ laughter ] anthats in the show 9 00 every night seth wow, thats really great. [ cheers and applause do you have any preshow ritual at all oh, yeah, yeah. Myself and char mcbrearty, our stage manager, we shout you and me, baby. To each other. I have to shout it and she shouts it back and then for some ason, since weve come to new york, we also shout bocca di lupo. Seth which is, bocca di lupo . Mouth of the wolf seth oh, wowug [ laer ] but its also a really lovely restaurant in london seth oh, well, there you go. Its a nice thing to yell seth i like you said some reason, like, you guys didnt come up with i it did feel like that we decided then we were like, oh, no, thats gonna be i dont know how long its going to go on forgo seth thats g to stay. There are obviously its very funny, but there are some real moments of emotional resonance in the show. Theres a theres a gasp moment in the show certainly when i washere is that something that happens and is that something youre happy when you hear it oh, yeah. E thats another one of th moments where you think, weve still got them. Like, even if its a quiet audience, if its a gasp its called the guinea pig gasp for reasons that well, you know, youll have to work out. Something happens to the guinea pig. The early previews, i ted it in describing this thing that happens to the guinea pig, and it just wasnt landing with audience and i was doing two or three previews in, and i was like, io t feel im getting a reaction from them. And vicky jones, the director and i, we sat around and i sort of, changed the words a bit, changed the rhythm of what i was saying and then there was one night when i said, okay, were going to try it with this new rhythm. And i said, what happens to the guinea pig . And the entire audience went [ gasps and i went [ gasps [ laughter ] so, now it happens and then last night, actually, i tried something a little bit different and the audience laughed but there was one woman in the audience that, kind of, just the gasp went the wrong way and she just ended up screaming. [ laughter ] she said, ah [ laughter ] seth you because, of course, you adapted and unlike your stage show in which there are no guinea pigs, there are physical guinea pigs in the au television show, bec you run a guinea pigthemed cafe yes, yes. Seth and i do not believe this is true, but you brought proof in order to get when you wanted to find guinea pigs for the show, they sent you head shots. Well, yes laughter ] yes. We needed one guinea pig, hillary. And so we had to find her. And, of course, they st us the a list seth the best guinea pigs. The best guinea pigs. [ laughter ] and they told us we spokeano a few handlers, d they sent us these head shots seth and so we decided they were the equivalent of, lik hollywood stars. Seth okay. [ laughter ] this is like shes like the Jennifer Lawrence of the guinea pigs. [ laughter ] you can, like, see shes got real depth and also kindf blonde well, this is the emma stone seth emma stone guinea pig clearly got range seth clearly got range you can tell, like, funny and ou se [ light lahter ] funny and she actually got the job in the end seth oh, she did you went with emma stone eah, yeah, emma. I mean, how could you resist this is actually ryan gosling. Seth oh. Laughter ] i can see that the gender is, obviously neutral in our casting so, he didnt quite make the cut. Seth gotcha. Yeah. [ audience ohs ] i know i mean, i really wanted to give her the gig. But shes not quite right. Im not going to say who that reminds me of, actually. Seth really . Youre not [ laughter ] i will say i will say this guinea pig looks like it was maybe out a little late. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah [ laughter ] seth and you maybe couldnt quite depend on it showing up on time [ laughter ] or when she does, its really raw and edgy stuff seth and they were like,if you can get her out of her trailer, shes great. [ laughter ] but, like, sometimes shes just like shes in the wheel and shes got yeah, yeah. [ laughter ] seth obviously, youve been a performer and a writer for a very long time you got your start one of the things i heard you started with was you wrote an anonymous article in your church paper your local church paper. Parish magazine seth wow othow did it come up you ghe idea to write for it, and why did you want to be anonymous i think because i was saying i was about 11 or 12 i think i was exposing quite personal tngs in the family. Seth gotcha. The main reason i wanted to be anonymous the main storyline although i did call it lifat number 62, and we lived at number 62. Seth okay, gotcha. [ laughter ] and i think people wereke and also, it was mainly kind of hamster adventurebased. Seth gotcha. News. Seth oh, i see and we had a hamster. Seth your writing has been, sort of, rodent inspired for your whole [ light laughter ] i just realized that. [ unintelligible ] my god, this is where it all comes from and then, the news was like my hamster was called chops and. He went missin and so, obviously i needed to express and write about that seth yeah. So, i wrote it, and shared it with the community and seth yeah. Wa ireally dark. It w like, day, three, still no sign of chops [ laughter ] moms got edgy seth s it was like gone girl but for a hamster. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [ laughter ] ssd its like, my brother has been searching and no sign so we all thought but then the amazing thing is, is chops came back seth wow chops came back [ cheers and applause yeah [ cheers and applause and so, you can imagine that entry. O seth yeah. I, like, walked out around our community and church being like, guys, right right . I nted to, like, feel the Audience Response and everyone there was one person i think who was keen seth yeah. Thats good. Do you think chops maybe saw the article d realized he was loved . [ laughter ] hes like, i got to go home i didnt think theyd even notice. [ laughter ] he looked a bit like she who should not be named. Seth number 4. He went in looking like Jennifer Lawrence and came out looking like that. [ laughter ] seth thats the before and after, yeah. [ laughter ] the floorbrds, do not go under there. I had an amazing time, man. Oh, my gosh. Seth you Olivia Colman, oscar winner, Olivia Colman is in the series. And did you how do you get someone like Olivia Colman to agree to do your show . Oh, well, you emotionally bribe her with your friendship seth gotcha. Thats a nice starting point, a friendship so, i madher come see fleabag the play and then made her tell me that she loved it so much she wanted to be in athing i wrote. And then she came to see the play, and shes i mean, and also the naughtiest, most mischievous. And she really likes the play. And she said, if you ever want me to be in anything, th let know. But id already written the pilot for the show for the tv show. And so i w like, oh, let me just quickly write in a part for Olivia Colman. And then theres one role in the play of the godmother that t isked about but not only for a couple of sentences. So, i spoke to her about that. We talked about what shes like to play. And i just thought, god, i havent seen her play someone who is really awful and, like, seth yeah. And the kind of cruel seth and when you give a friend a part and say, hey, i wrote you as an awful person, did she thrilled seth thrilled . Yeah thrilled. Everyone wann. To play the villai seth yeah, and shes really good at it yeah, shes brilliant at it, yeah seth thank you so much for being herere just such a pleao see you.
