This is not what you normally see on a saturday evening. People are frustrated. Theyre confused trying to figure out if theyre going to be able to get on a plane today. Now lets go to some video. The problem started at an air Traffic Control center in leesburg earlier this morning that caused some ground stops, again delays, cancellations, the problem was resolved right around 4 00 this afternoon, but there is this huge backlog now. Thats what were seeing at the airport. Some flights were even diverted around washington. Some are being told that they are going to have to wait as late as monday to get their flight. We wanted to go to tampa and our flight was at 5 45, but we are not able to make it because the computer shut down and it seems to be a computer problem over there. I am traveling back home to st. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and need to get back to work for monday so my flight at 2 50 was delayed. I must say, u. S. Air and American Airlines are very helpful, theyre trying to pass out cards, rebook your flight, so hopefully ill get out of here this evening. They canceled my flight. Where are you trying to go . Fort lauderdale. They told me it was canceled. Theyre not told me the best they can do is get me on another flight for monday. I dont plan to be here until monday. Reporter and a lot of people are finding themselves in that situation, that they may have to wait until monday. People are trying to get back home to get to work on monday. We talked to numerous people trying to get down to florida for family vacations. Its hard to get a grip on exactly how big this problem is, whether its hundreds or thousands of people affected. And it goes without saying, if you plan to travel today here in the d. C. Area, you want to call ahead and make sure you dont get stuck here at the airport as well back to you. Great news. Darcy spencer, thanks for that. Two men are dead after a construction accident in elcot city. They were in the bucket of the lift machine and suddenly tipped over, throwing them to the ground. The men have been identifieds as Roland Mendez from Silver Spring and eric ortiz from hyattsville. They dont know why the machine tipped over. The murder rate in the district went up. With another deadly shooting. This happened on first and bait street northwest about two blocks from the new done done barr high school in the area. Police say somebody shot and killed Lawrence Carter this morning. He had been shot once and was unconscious. Theres a 25,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction for any homicide in the district. Prince georges police are investigating a shooting involving three of its officers and a forestville man. The man got into a struggle with the officers and was shot and tased. He died this morning at a local hospital. Derrick ward has that story. Reporter a Prince Georges Police officer is on administrative leave and 30yearold asshams Farrow Manley is dead following the incident that happened about 11 30 friday night. According to Prince Georges Police it started here at marlboro pike and brooks drive. There was an accident. They say a car driven by manley was going the wrong way on brooks drive when it hit an suv. A Patrol Officer nearby came upon the crash and manley running from the scene. Police say a female passenger ran from the car and hasnt been found. According to police the officer followed manley in his cruiser an caught up with him. The suspect was struggling with the officer for the officers weapon. The officer discharged his weapon and the suspect was struck. Reporter police say they kept struggling and the officer fired more than once. Another officer showed up and tased manley. The suspect was 67, had been shot multiple times and tased and still not xlig with officer commands. Reporter police say a third officer showed up and they were able to get handcuffs on manley taken to the hospital and died before 8 00 the next morning. People who live nearby say it was a chaotic scene and unclear what was happening. A lot of police cars racing down the street and as they was coming down, it was a lot of them just posted right along the corners. Reporter police say early tests show opiates and marijuana in manleys system and will take more toxicology screening to determine what the opiates were and how many times manley was sh shot. They have talked to a Family Member. A Family Member says the suspect had been dealing with suicidal thoughts and was being treated for Mental Health issues. Reporter derrick ward, news 4. Police in gaithersburg are trying to find a man who was seen breaking windows on girard street last night. Should have been easy to spot because he was running around naked at the time. About an hour and a half after he was seen breaking windows police were searching for him about three miles away near Washington Grove land and emory grove road. Reinforcements today in the fight against graffiti. Why the problem could affect you even if you live far away. And a major scare at banks and Grocery Stores in one local community. Find out what forced police to evacuate the buildings and then what officers found once they got to the scene. And today at Reagan National we hit 90 degrees marking day one of our heat wave. About 15 minutes later a third call comes in saying there was a device inside the giant on bay ridge road. Police evacuated the buildings and nearby businesses. We havent had any demands made like this and any where there were two or three that happened at once. Thats a rarity and its not something that we get but its like any other case, like any other investigation, we are thoroughly looking at it. Our detectives are working on it and we asked the fbi and theyre looking at it from their independent angle working with us also. They woke up today in shelters around the area, but they didnt know today would be different. Today would be special for these little guys. Nbc 4 joined forces with the shelters to launch a major pet adoption effort today. And let me tell you, this worked like gang busters. The project is called clear the shelters. As in clear them of animals in need of a home and the loving family. News 4 wendy rieger was at one of the shelters and has the story. Reporter the Washington Humane Society started the day with about 170 dogs and cats ready for adoption, and as nbc 4 put out the call to clear the shelters, people came. This is why im here, to adopt a dog or cat. It dont party. Matter. I want a dog he wants a dog so were going to adopt together. Our first dog together. Reporter because of the nbc clear the shelter campaign, more than 20 shelters across our region agreed to cut the adoption fees. The Washington Humane Society went even further. Today the fees are waived and we want people to come out and find their newest Family Member and we have a large variety. Lets Work Together to find these guys homes. Reporter as their usual policy all the animals leave in good health. All the animals come sterilized, vaccinated, complete medical health check on them, behavior evaluations. Reporter the shelters do more than house the animals. They have a network of fosters so the dogs and cats arent living in cages all the time. And they have something called the pack program. 13 volunteers take a dog with them when they go for a run. He had a run in Rock Creek Park this morning with about 12 or 13 other dogs and volunteers who exercised them, brought them back so theyre ready to be adopted this afternoon. Reporter a special bond that is created between a human and an mall and when you animal and when you rescue you have the satisfaction of knowing it is one less creature abandoned. Perfect. A great day. A small, but hardworking group of volunteers did battle with graffiti on lower georgia avenue. The neighbors and Business Owners on the street near v street say graffiti is a major problem that reduces Property Value and increases criminal activity so they brought paint to paint over the graffiti on the walls and cleaning solutions that destroys it on our surfaces. The equipment they used was donated so after todays event was over volunteers could carry on the battle to other areas.
