A mile back, there was a drone flying just under the southside of this abandoned airport here. Reporter an unmanned drone, dangerously close to a flight about a land. What altitude would you say that was . Probably a hundred feet below us. Reporter normal required separation is 1,000 feet. Concerned, the tower told other pilots to be on alert. The one ahead of you reported a drone over there. A drone over there. Its extremely dangerous to the aircraft. Reporter john would know. Hes an airplane technician at kennedy. A drone so close to a plane could spell disaster. Ingestion into the engine or windshield damage. If it hits the cockpit where the pilot is sitting. Reporter this isnt the airports first close call with a drone. In november, three pilots reported unmanned drones flying close as they approached the airport. The faa says incidents like this are becoming a serious problem with several reports of drones near planes every day. Its bad enough you have to worry about nature, with the birds going into the plane, but thats something that you can help. The city added a hotel to the list of locations where samples tested positive for the bacteria. The melrose section of the bronx, people are very concerned. Reporter some guests at the Opera House Hotel had no idea until we told them. The bacteria that causes legionnaires disease was found in a cooling tower here. I didnt know it was this hotel. I hope nothing happens to my wife and me. Reporter so far, no one at the hotel has gotten sick. The Hotel Manager tells us the cooling tower is being disinfected. Were taking all the necessary steps to make sure were safe, the hotel is a safe place to stay and making sure no one getting sick by the bacteria. Reporter the outbreak of legionnaires is growing. 57 people have gotten sick and three have died. Health experts are trying to track down the source. So far, theyve checked 22 buildings. 17 of them have cooling towers. Three of those buildings have tested positive for the bacteria. The hotel, Concourse Plaza Shopping Center and lincoln hospital. Symptoms are fever, diarrhea, muscle aches and chills. It doesnt spread person to person. You can only get it by breathing in the bacteria. We asked an expert why legionnaires is showing up in cooling towers. Whatever is in the atmosphere is pulled into the cooling tower. Theres more dirt and debris in areas that organisms can grow in.
