MADISON (WKOW) -- At this point in the 2019-20 flu season, Wisconsin had recorded 9,257 influenza cases. This year, the state has recorded 38 cases. That represents a 99.6% decrease in cases.
"It's quite stunning to look at the lack of influenza this year," Dr. David Ottenbaker, SSM Health's Vice President of Ambulatory Clinical Programs, said Tuesday.
Ottenbaker told 27 News he's never seen such a large difference between two flu seasons.
"The numbers are incredibly low, and the million dollar question is why," he said.
Ottenbaker said there are a number of theories about why cases are so much lower this year, but he said doctors haven't been able to pinpoint an exact cause.
