Remember Tonka trucks? Avocado-green appliances? Catalina stereo consoles?
Let’s go back to about 1973 and see what’s on the shelves for Christmas in this White Stores Inc. advertisement.
White’s was a Wichita Falls-based retail store that sold auto parts, furniture, toys and appliances. Nothing high-end or expensive, but if you needed to furnish your new ranch-style house, chances are there was a White’s in your neighborhood that had what you needed.
Some Bayou City History readers on Facebook likened the chain to Western Auto.
“Our first living room furniture was from there in 1965,” wrote Patricia Tidwell. “An orange leather, (plastic) couch & chair, & tan recliner. LOL! But it lasted a long time. I think we paid $199. It was in Pasadena.”
