The Cubs were in Oakland, where they faced the Athletics in the middle game of a 3-game series.
The Cubs had lost the opener the previous night, 8-7, on a 3-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.
They went into the Wednesday evening rematch with a record of 36-45, mired in fourth place in the Central Division, 15.5 games behind the first-place Pirates and 11.5 in back of the third-place Reds. They led the last-place Brewers by 2.5 games.
The A's (49-35) held a half-game lead over the Rangers in the AL West.
