Transdev spokesman Alexander Earl said the 10am Waikanae to Wellington train stopped because of the lack of power.
He could not comment on how it ended up on the wrong track as that was being investigated. The initial investigation was by Transdev, which is Metlink’s rail operator, as well as KiwiRail. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission may be called in to investigate, he said.
Metlink sent out a tweet about midday on Saturday saying all services were suspended due to an operational issue. Services resumed about 2pm.
Passengers in stalled trains had to disembark onto the tracks and walked to buses to take them into the city.
